今日は珍しく雨が降っている。母も私も雨の降る音が大好き。 雨が降っている日は窓辺でコーヒーを飲むの
がとても心地いい。 空気がちょっと肌寒くてもカップからの水蒸気とコーヒーの香ばしい香りが暖めてくれる。
こんな静かな日はいろいろなことを考えることができる。 日本ではとても忙しい毎日を送っている私にとって
年二回のアメリカ滞在は充電できる時でもある。 後、一週間で日本に帰る。 私のモードもそろそろクラスの
準備、レッスンプランに入ってきている。

It has been raining today. My mother and I love rain sounds. Standing and drinking a cup of coffee by a
window on a rainy day is my favorite. The air feels cold, but the steam and the fragrance of coffee makes
me feel warm. I can think about many things in this calm day. As I have been very busy in Japan, staying in
the U.S. twice a year is my recharging time. I must go back to Japan in a week. I start thinking about the
preparation of my classes and lesson plans.

ニューメキシコでの休暇中に靴下一足を編み終えた。 一
年以上も靴下を編んでいなかったのでメリアス止め覚えて
いるか不安だったがちゃんと指が覚えていた。北海道の冬
は寒いので教室では編んだ靴下は手放せない。 手編み
の靴下は弱く、底がすぐに薄くなってしまうので、今回は底
の部分に刺し子ステッチをしてみた。長く履けるといいな
あ。

I finished knitting a pair of socks during the vacation in
New Mexico. In Hokkaido, I really need knitted socks for
my classroom. However, knitted socks are weak, so they
do not last for a long time. This time, I hit on a good idea
to make my knitted socks last longer. I did Sashiko
stitches on the soles. I hope they will last longer.

December 29th - January 1st Our Vacation in New Mexico
| ラスクルーセスにくるのは久しぶり。 ジェフがアリゾナに移ってからははじめてのラスク ルーセス。 朝早くに着いたのでいつも朝に行っていたDurango Bagelで朝食をとった。 ここへは一年以上来ていないのになんだかいつも来ている気がする。 不思議だ。 隣 のショップにLuminarias(ルーメナリア)があったので写真を撮った。Luminariasはインディ アンからの伝統で冬の間が暗い夜を照らすため道路わきにろうそくを立て空洞の茶封 筒をかぶせてランタンのようにしたのが始まりです。 夜にはLuminariasのライトがやさし くニューメキシコの夜を照らします。私はそれを見るといつもニューメキシコのユニークな 文化がいかに上手に生かされているか驚くのです。 I had not been in Las Cruces for half a year. We arrived at Las Cruces in the early morning, so we took our breakfast at Durango Bagel where we used to go. It was so strange that we felt as if we still lived in Las Cruces. We did not feel that we had not been there for more than a year. Next to the bagel shop, there was a shop with Luminarias (You see them in the photo). Native Americans started this tradition. Lumenarias can light dark nights in winter. At night, Luminarias can light New Mexico from soft paper shades. Whenever I see them, I cannot help thinking how the unique culture of New Mexico is still alive. |
| ラスクルーセスでの一日の私たちの目的は友達に逢うこと。ジェフは自分の友達に逢い、私は自分の友達に逢いま した。 大学でずっと日本語を教えている辺見先生は私にとってアメリカの日本人の母です。いつもどんな生徒さんに もやさしく、人気があるので卒業した後も先生を訪れる生徒さんでいつもあふれています。ここに来ると必ず訪れいろ いろな話をします。 今回もたくさん楽しいお話ができうれしく思いました。そしてもう一人私の目標とする人は趣味友 達のスワンソン先生。彼女は大学で数学を教えています。 夜にはスワンソン先生のお宅にお呼ばれされたので先 生のお母様に会うことができました。お母様はスロバキアからクリスマスのために来ていて、手作りのApple Strudel (アップルスツルーデル）をご馳走になりました。 とてもおいしかったです。 スワンソン先生は新しいキルトフレームを 購入したので私にどのように使うか見せてくれました。 大学で教えて、キルトをし、家事をこなし、そして子供を育て ているパワフルな彼女にいつも私は私も頑張ろうという勇気とやる気を与えてもらっています。 We were in Las Cruces for a day to meet our friends. Jeff met his friends, and I met my friends. Professor Henmi, who has been teaching Japanese at NMSU, is my Japanese mother in the U.S. She is always kind to every student, and she is popular, so there are many students who see her even though they graduated. Whenever I come to Las Cruces, I never forget to see her. This time, I was very glad that I could talk with her about many things. There is another lady who inspires me a lot; Professor Swanson connects with me through quilting. She teaches Mathematics at NMSU. At night, we were invited to her house, and we met her mother from Slovakia. She made Apple Strudel. It was very good. Professor Swanson showed me how the quilt frame worked. She teaches at a university, makes quilts, does housekeeping, and raises her child. She is energetic, and she always gives me courage to work hard and do my best. |
| スワンソン先生のお子さんがスロバキアから来たお母様と母国語でお話をしていた。言語に興味がある私はどうやっ て彼がスロバキアの言語が話せるのか伺った。スワンソン先生が教えない限り彼が言語を習得するのは不可能だか らだ。 彼が話せるようになるにはその言語において、かなりのインプットが必要である。彼女は２冊のノートを見せて くれた。すべてのページには手書きのカラフルな絵と彼女の母国語で書かれた歌、詩、文章が載っていた。これらは すべてスワンソン先生によって愛を込めて書かれたのものである。手作り教材が多い私もこれには驚いた。こういっ た愛情こもったノートによって彼の第二言語は習得しつつあるのだ。第二言語を教えている私にとってとても興味深 いノートだった。改めて絵と文章とのコンビネーションがどれだけ言語に欠かせないのかを証明するものに出会った 気がした。 The son of Professor Swanson talked with her mother in her language. As I am interested in languages, I asked her how he acquired her language. It would be impossible to acquire it unless Professor Swanson taught him. To be fluent in any language, you need a lot of input in the language. She showed me two notebooks. There was a song, poem, or paragraph with a colorful picture in each page. They were written and drawn by Professor Swanson with lots of love. Even though I make many handmade materials to teach English, I was astonished to see them. These notebooks with her love allowed him to acquire her language as his second language. I met the proof of how the combination of pictures and sentences allows a child to learn a language. |

When my studies were so difficult, this turquoise colored sky healed me while I was a student. In the yard of Jeff's parents, there is a pecan tree. They had a lot of pecans last year. Can you see some pecans left in the picture? |
| トーマス家 今回はクリスマス後にみんな両親の家で集まって遅いクリスマスとお正月をお祝いした。 ジェフの弟、奥さ ん、二人のかわいい子供たちも一緒に８人での集まりはお決まりである。ママはビスケットを焼いて、パパは ポークチョップを焼きお野菜と一緒にみんなで食べた。みんなでわいわい食べるととてもおいしいね。 Thomas Family This time we celebrated Christmas and the New Year together at Jeff's parents' home. Jeff's brother, his wife, and two adorable children were there too. Mom baked biscuits and Dad cooked pork chops. We ate them with veggies. Eating with all our family members made the foods more delicious. |
| 誕生日のプディング 私の誕生日は１月である。ママはバナナプディングを 作ってくれてみんな誕生日の歌を歌ってくれた。３２歳 になる！ 自分に乾杯！ My Birthday Pudding My birthday is in January. Mom made me a banana pudding. They sang the birthday song for me. I will be 32 soon. Cheers to myself! |

| ママ ジェフのお母さんは私にとって大切なアメリカの母です。母は料理(特にお菓子)が上手で裁縫も編み物も得意。 キルト作りもします。 私の日本の母も同じです。だから私にとって二人の母は大先生であり、とても大切な存在 なのです。 アメリカのママは私が今まで知らなかったことをいろいろと教えてくれます。今回はママが若かった 時によく作った服のはぎれや古いボタンをいただきました。 布やボタンは１９５０年代、６０年代、７０年代のも のです。 これらの布を見ると、これらが新しかった時がどんなだったかいろいろと想像してしまいます。これらを 使っていろいろなものを作っていきたいと思います。 後にこれらの布を使ったクリエーションがショップに登場す ることでしょう。 ママのたくさんの思い出がつまった布でできたものが私だけでなくほかの人々にも幸せを運び ますように。 そしてママ、たくさんありがとう。 Mom Jeff's mother is my American mother. She is good at cooking (especially sweets), sewing, quilting and crocheting. My Japanese mother is the same way but in a different culture. Therefore, my two mothers are my great teachers also, and they are important to me. My American mom teaches me things I have never known before. This time, she gave me many buttons and many leftover fabrics which she used to sew for her family. They are from 1950's, 60's, and 70's. When I see the fabrics, I can imagine the time when they were new. I am planning to make bags using these fabrics. Later on, the creations will be available in this shop. I hope the creations using the fabrics which have many memories of Mom will carry happiness to others. Mom, thank you very much. |
