2月27日 手作りリップクリーム
みつろう、アボカドオイル、ココアバター、そしてスペアミントのエッセンシャルオ イル
で香り付けしたリップクリームは夫からのリクエスト。材料を溶かして容器に入 れるだ
け。このリップクリームはとっても唇をしっとりさせて乾燥から守ってくれる ので手放せ
ない。こういった材料を混ぜ合わせてハンドクリームなども手軽に出来上 がる。好き
なエッセンシャルオイルを混ぜて大好きな香りになったクリームは本当に 心地いい。
February 27th Handmade lipbalm
My husband requested my handmade lipbalm. It is made from beeswax, avocado oil,
cocoa butter with spearmint essential oil. It is easy to make them. You can melt the
ingredients and pour into a container. This lipbalm is very effective for chapped lips.
It is also easy to make handcream this way. You can put in your favorite essential
oils, so you will feel very cozy with your favorite smells.
2月25日 布のカード
遠距離結婚している私たちは時としてメールではなく郵便を通して便りを送る。 アメ
リカには色々なすばらしい言葉が書かれたカードが売られている。そういったカードを
読むのは大好きだった。 しかし自分がカードを夫に送るときは自分で作るようにして
いる。やはり自分の言葉で思いを伝えたいからだ。 自分らしくカードを作れるのは
布。だから布で表現してカードとして夫に送っている。コンピューターがある目の前の
壁は真っ白でそこは私の布カードの展示場になっている。 その壁は私の思いが描
かれるキャンパスなのだ。
February 25th Fabric Cards
As my husband and I live in different countries, we sometimes send cards to each
other in addition to e-mails. In the U.S., there are many different cards with
wonderful words printed, and I love to read them. However, when I send cards to
Jeff, my husband, I try to make them, because I want to tell my feeling and thoughts
with my own words. The best way I can express myself is using fabric. That is how I
make cards for Jeff. There is a white wall in front of the computer. He displayed my
fabric cards there. That place is the campus of my thought drawings.
2月23日 待ちに待った“くちぶえカタログ”
やっと来た来た！松浦弥太郎さんの“くちぶえカタログ”！ 長いこと待っていまし
た！ すぐにでも読みたいのだけれども週末まで待つ予定です。 私は毎週末石けん
を作っていて、石けんの生地を型に流すまでに数時間かかります。 その数時間の
間、読書するのがとても好きなんです。 こういった大好きな本は忙しい合間にちょ こ
ちょこ読むより、日本茶やコーヒーを横に置いて肌寒い自分の部屋へ行きじっくり 読
みたいのです。 早く週末にならないかなあ。
February 23rd The long-awaited book "Kuchibue Katarogu" (Whistle Catalog)
I had been waiting for this book for a long long time. This book was written by Yataro
Matsuura who is one of my favorite authors. I would love to read it right now, but I
am planning to wait until the weekend. Every weekend, I make soap. It takes several
hours until I can put soap into the molds. During that time, I love to sit in my cold
room with a cup of Japanese tea or coffee, and read a book. I will wait for that
moment with this book.
2月22日 花柄のシャツ
週末春を感じたくてフェアアイルの編みかけのセーターを横目で
見ながら春らしい シャツを作った。 手持ちの型紙のあきと衿を
変えて(母に衿の型紙を作ってもらい) アレンジした。Ｓｏａｐ
Ｔｈｏｍａｓのタグもついでにスリットの上につけてみ た。いつも自
分で作った服を着ているので生徒に“それも自分で作ったの？
春らしい ね”と言われその言葉に私は春を感じた。
February 22nd Flower Print Shirt
Last weekend, I made a spring shirt for myself while I looked at
the Fair Isle sweater which I had been knitting.. I arranged the
collar (my mother made the pattern for the collar). I also put a
Soap Thomas tag above the slit in the shirt. As I always wear
my handmade clothes, one of my students said, "Did you make
this one too? It is really Spring!." Those words gave me the
feeling of Spring.
2月20日 お世話になった古本屋
松浦弥太郎さんの“くちぶえサンドイッチ”にはブックストアで働く女の子の話や電 車に乗ってケーキをつまみなが
ら夢中で本を読んでいる女の子のお話があった。それ らを読んでからずっと頭にこびりついているのは、ニューメ
キシコ州ラスクルーセス で学生時代通い詰めた ＣＯＡＳ ＢＯＯＫＳＴＯＲＥ である。ＣＯＡＳ ＢＯＯＫＳＴＯＲＥ は
古本屋で、膨大な数の本がある。 貴重であるとされる本はかぎのかかったガラス 戸の本棚に保管されているが
その他のものは、新品よりもずっと安く売られている。 大学で必要な本(教科書以外の)はまずはＣＯＡＳをチェッ
クする。山ほどある本の 中から自分の必要な本を探すのはたいへんだ。ところが、そこで働いている人々の中 に
中年女性がいて、その人に訊くと私が探している本の場所まで連れて行ってくれて 本棚からひょこっと出してくれ
る。彼女はいつもメガネをかけていてお化粧もしてい ない。来ている服は大体トレーナーの上下である。本を整理
して分類し、本棚に移す 時、ときどき彼女はぱらぱらっとページをめくる。 私はそんな彼女を横目で見て、 あっ、
きっとこうやってどんな本なのか勉強しているのかなあと思っていた。 時に は夢中になって読んでいる姿も見た
ことがある。 私はそんな彼女の姿を見つからな いように見ているのがとっても好きだった。

In the book written by Yataro Matsuura, there are essays about a girl who works at a
bookstore; a girl who reads a book while eating a piece of cake on a train. These stories
remind me of Coas Bookstore. It has many used books. If the books are valuable, they
are in the special bookshelf with a lock. If they are usual books, you can buy them much
cheaper than new ones. When I was a collage student, I used to go there. However, it
was difficult for me to find the books I wanted. I always asked a woman who worked
there. She was mid-age, with no makeup on. She knew everything in the bookstore. When
I asked her what I wanted, she took me to the bookshelf, and she pulled the right books
for me. I have seen her organizing and returning the books. She sometimes opened the
books and turned several pages. I thought she might read and learn what the book is
about. I also have seen her reading a book with concentration. I tried not to be noticed
when I watched her. I really liked to watch her reading.

2月18日 天井が青い理由
私が教室を開校する時、ペンキ屋さんに天井を青く塗ってくださいと言ったら、 “はっ？
青ですか？”とびっくりされた。教室の天井が青いのには理由がある。色は 人を影響す
る。 青空の下にいる子供の顔とコンクリートの灰色の建物の中にいる子 供の顔を比べ
たら、青空の下にいる子供の方が笑顔が多いと思う。だから、生徒(大 人を含めて）がよ
そ見をした時、天井の青を見て、たのしい想像ができるかもしれな いと思った。 笑うと
心も和み、学ぶのも楽しいはず。確かにここでは笑顔が多い。 私を含めてげらげら笑う
ことも多い。天井の青はいつも私たちの笑い声を見守ってく れているのかも。
February 18th The reason for the blue ceiling in the classroom
When I started my school, I asked the painter to color the ceiling blue. He looked at me
strangely for that. There is a reason to color the ceiling blue for a classroom. Color
influences human minds. Compare children's faces under a blue sky and in a grey
concrete building. I am sure that children under a blue sky have more smiles than the
ones in the grey concrete building. When my students look away and they see the blue
ceiling, it may make them imagine something fun. When you smile or laugh, your mind
calms down, and you can enjoy learning. In our classroom, there is much laughing. The
blue ceiling may watch over our laughing every day.
February 14th Happy Valentine's Day
In Japan, our Valentine's custom is different from the U.S.
On February 14th, girls gives boys chocolate to express
their feelings, or girls gives boys chocolate to say thank
you. A gift to say thank you is called "obligation
chocolate". When you work, a woman needs to buy the
obligation chocolate (a lot). On TV, they say Valentine's
Day in Japan is changing. Ladies buy chocolate for
themselves on Valentine's Day. Well, is it for "I love myself
more" and "Love me more"? I wonder. In my classroom, I
teach children about the American custom of sending
Valentines among children. Whenever I go visit the U.S. in
winter, I buy Valentines after the Christmas bazaar. I give
them to my students. Moreover, the students make
Valentines in my classroom. They love to make them, and
they and I believe handmade Valentines are the best. Do
you agree with us?

2月14日 ヴァレンタインズ
アメリカの子供たちはヴァレンタインと呼ばれる小さなカー
ドを男女関係なくお友達 同士で交換します。 冬、私がアメ
リカに行ってクリスマスバザーが終わると真っ先 に毎年購
入するのがこのヴァレンタインなのです。2月14日が近づく
と子供たちは ヴァレンタインのカードを教室で各自作った
後、家族や友達に配るのが宿題なので す。 子供たちと私
はいつも“やっぱり手作りヴァレンタインが一番かわいいね”
と 言い、色々なデザインで色々な色の画用紙でヴァレンタ
インを作ります。 私が夫に 送ったヴァレンタインはまだ届
いていません。どこへ行ったのかなあ。
2月12日
”くちぶえサンドイッチ”
ひょんなことから出遭ったこの本、”くちぶえサンドイッチ”。
松浦弥太郎さんが書かれたこの本を読んで、又、大好きな
作家が一人増えた。私は文章や言葉に恋をするとそのペー
ジの下の角を折る癖がある(自分の本のみ）。 くちぶえサ
ンドイッチには、びっくりするほど折った角でいっぱいになっ
た。 たいていエッセイ本はふうん、なるほど、あはは（笑）
で終わるものか、もしくはちょっと背筋を伸ばして読むもの
か分かれるのが多いと思う。 しかしこの本はわはは(笑)の
中に背筋がぴーんと張るものがある。(この本の中で）数多く
あるエッセイの中に読んで気に入った部分があると一日中
頭の中につきまとっているほどである。
私の人生には空間があった。その空間で私は自分を見つ
め直し、真の自分を問い詰めた。 松浦さんの考えは私の
この空間で生み出された経験や考え方とぴったりと合う部
分がある。字のごとくぴったりと。松浦さんの人の心を温か
にする本への思い、旅、人の出逢いなど、読んでいて私の
心は本当に温かくなった。
読書好きな夫に松浦弥太郎さんのことを話すと、”面白そう
だね。その作家の考え方、とっても興味がある。読んでみた
いよ。英語で書いてくれないかなあ” と、うらやましそうだっ
た。
注文していた松浦弥太郎さんの本、”最低で最高の本
屋”、 皆川明さんの “ミナを着て旅に出よう”が昨日届い
た。 随分前に注文した松浦さんの“くちぶえカタログ”、早く
来ないかなあと、随分松浦弥太郎さんが気に入ってしまっ
た。

Kuchibue Sandoicchi (Whistle Sandwiches)
I came across this wonderful book, "Kuchibue Sandoicchi"
written by Yataro Matsuura. He has become one of my
favorite authors. Whenever I fall in love with the words or
sentences, I have a habit of folding the botton corner of
the page, if it is my book. This book was full of folded
corners. Essays are usually divided into relaxing reading or
serious reading. However, this book has both. Some of my
favorite parts of this book even stay in my mind for a day
or more.
In my life, there was a space where I searched for who I
was, and I found who I am. Some of Mr. Matsuura's ideas
fit what I found in my time of searching. They "fit" to my
ideas, quite literally. Reading his book made my heart warm.
When I talked about this author to my husband, Jeff, he
was interested in the ideas and writing. He really wishes
Mr. Matsuura wrote in English also.
I ordered more books by this author. I am really fond of him.

ちょっと早いヴァレンタインデイ
昨日夫からヴァレンタインのプレゼントが届いた。ＧＯＤＩＶＡのチョコレート、ブラックマ
ウンテンの大好きなフレンチバニラのコーヒーそして真っ赤なカード。 日本では女の
人が男の人にチョコレートをあげますがアメリカではどちらかというと男の人が女の人
にお花、チョコレート、香水、カードなどを贈ります。 その代わりホワイトデイがありま
せん。 私も夫に小さなプレゼントを贈りましたがまだ届いていないようなのでとどくの
を待っています。 私はフレイバーコーヒーでフレンチバニラはブラックマウンテンのが
一番おいしいと思う。バニラの風味がほかとは全然違う。 でもなかなか売っていない
ので見つけるのが大変。 これがなくなったら、インターネットでの購入を考えようっ
と。このバニラコーヒー、とってもおいしいけどきっと夫と一緒に飲んだらもっとおいしい
のになあ。。

Early Valentine's Day
The package from my husband arrived. It was for Valentine's Day.
I got a red card, GODIVA chocolate, and french vanilla coffee. I also sent him a
small present. I hope he will recieve it soon. I love the Black Mountain Coffee
brand of french vanilla. Their french vanilla tastes different from others. The coffee
tastes very good; I wish I could drink it with my husband, because it would taste
even better...

今日、夫が注文してくれたタグが届いた。 ワイン色というよりはレンガ色に近い。 今
まであまりタグなんて気にしたことがなかった。 服についているタグ、クロス やバッグ
についているタグといろいろなところにタグがついている。 タグって何の ためにある
んだろうと思うと、誰(どの会社）が作ったかを知らせる印鑑のようなサ インのようなも
のなんだなあと思った。 自分の印鑑のような自分のタグを目の前に して考え
る。。。。 何作ろう。。。

Tag
The tags my husband ordered arrived. The color of the tag is not like wine-red but
like a brick-red. I did not think about it, but there are tags everywhere: clothing,
towels, and bags. What is a tag for? It is the sign of the person or the company that
made something.. My tag, I wonder what to make...

１００ｇ
家には頬に赤いパッチのないオカメインコがいる。
名前はスノーフレイク。 もち ろん雪のように白いこ
とからその名が決まった。 この鳥、実は犬のようで
ある。私たちが家に帰ってくると犬のジョイに知らせ
てあげるほど利口である。 水浴びが大好きでこの
ように凍える冬であっても水浴びがしたい。 その後
は風邪など引かれたら大変なのでケージを暖かい
場所へ移動する。 ところでこの鳥、100ｇもある太っ
ちょちゃんのため、家ではハトちゃんと呼ばれること
もある。
February 7th
100g
We have an albino cocktiel. As she is white as
snow, we named her Snowflake. She is actually
smart like a dog. Sometime when we come home,
she lets my dog Joy know we are coming. She
loves to bathe. Even when it is very cold like now,
she wants to bathe. I am afraid she will catch a
cold, so I move her cage to a warmer place. Oh, by
the way, she weighs 100g. She is a big bird, so we
sometimes calls her "Dove".

フェアアイルのセーター
一昨年フェアアイルの編みこみにはまって今年で３年目。でもこの冬の
セーターは秋に編み始めたのに今、身頃がやっと終わって袖に取り掛かっ
ている。 佐藤ちひろさんの本は今までに何回開いたか分からないくらい大
好きで、今回もこの本からパターンを使い色は自分で１８０数色の中から決
めて編んでいます。 毛糸の色見本を見て色を決めるのだけれど、実際ス
ワッチとして編みこみを始めると想像していたものとはまったくというほど
違ってしまうので今回もちょっと違うと思いながら編んでいます。フェアアイ
ルの編み方は複雑に見えますが一段２色と決まっている為、私は右手と左
手に違う色をかけて編んでいます。フェアアイルのセーターはとても軽くて
暖かいので大好きです。自分で洗って少しフエルト化するのも楽しいで
す。 春までには出来上がってほしいなあ。 がんばろう。
February 3rd
Fair Isle Knitting
Since last year, fair isle knitting has been my favorite. I started my
sweater last fall but I have not finished knitting it yet. Now I am working
on sleeves. I love fair isle knitting. I can choose yarns from about 180
colors. While you choose the colors for your sweater, you imagine how it
will be, but when you knit a swatch, you see a totally different thing. It is
difficult to choose colors. I also love to wash the fair isle sweater to
make it felt a little bit. I cannot wait to wash this sweater, but first I must
finish knitting it.
2月1日 かわいい手紙をもらった。時々このように生徒からかわいい手紙をもらえるのはこの 仕事の特権！ 落ち込んでいる日や悲しい日でもこういった手紙は私の心の中をぱっ と明るくしてくれる。 手紙は英語とローマ字と入り混じった筆記体で書かれていて、こ んなに書けるようになったのねと感心してしまう。 うれしい気分にさせてくれてありが とうね。 February 1st I received a cute letter today. Receiving these letters from my students is a privilege of this kind of job. These letters always make my heart happy even though I have a bad day or I am sad. The letter was written in English and Roma-ji (Japanese words in the Roman Alphabet), but they were all cursive writing. I could see how much she could write in English also. I was glad to receive this cute letter this day. Thank you. |
