4月22日
先日あるクラスで自分で文を考え、英語に直し、そして絵を加えて自分で本を作ったクラスが
ある。写真はそれらの一部。 しっかりと出来上がった本を見るとなんだかジーンとしてしまっ
た。 主語がちゃんとあって、その次に動詞が並んで。。。と、いっぱい学んでくれたのねと思っ
た。 みんなの作った本を教室にしばらく飾っておくことにした。 実はそれは私がしばらく眺め
ていたいからなのだ。
April 22nd
The other day, the students in one of my classes made books by themselves. They had to
make a story, and write in English. Then they drew the pictures for their books. The
pictures in this blog are from some of their books. When I saw their books, I was very
touched. Each page has a sentence with a subject and a verb. It is not easy for Japanese
people to put verbs after the subjects, but they did. We decided to put the books on the
wall in our classroom. Well, to tell the truth, I wanted to keep the books for a while.
4月16日
久々の日記。 今月は夫も私も忙しい毎日を送っている。 夫は来週、出張があるし、私は新しいクラスと生徒で忙し
い。 週末はもちろん石けんを作りながら、かわいい小物を製作中。 週末にしか制作できないので、あまり数多くは
作れないが、5月のはじめぐらいにはＵＰできると思う。
April 16th
Jeff and I have been very busy working this month. Jeff will also have a business trip to Maryland next week while I
will be busy still with new classes and students. On the weekends, I have made soap and some handmade small
bags. As I can made these items only during weekends, there are not many. I hope I can put them up in the first
week of May.

ワシントン州へ
ニューメキシコ州やアリゾナ州は砂漠地帯として有名である。だからこそ、その地域特有の文化が生まれ、私は
その文化に魅了された。 しかし北海道生まれの私に砂漠地帯の夏は過酷なものである。 いつか永住する土
地として考える時、北国育ちの私にはニューメキシコ州やアリゾナ州は辛いものであった。 そんなこともあり、
夫と私は2カ国隔てたこの結婚の永住の地としてワシントン州を選んだ。 私はきっと数年後にワシントン州に移
るだろうと思っていた矢先、夫は4月４日付けでワシントン州に転勤になることが決まった。 今、夫は一人で引
越し準備で忙しい毎日を送っている。 4月の2週目にはメリーランドへの出張もあり、とても忙しいらしい。 引越
しの手伝いも出来ない私は私で新学期の準備であたふたした毎日を送っている。 結婚ってなんなんだろうとこ
の忙しい中疑問が浮かんだ。そして答えが見つからなかった。
Washington State
New Mexico State and Arizona State are famous for their desert areas. That is why I was fascinated by these
wonderful cultures. However, as I was born and grew up in Hokkaido (the north island of Japan), summer time
in the desert was very harsh for me. My husband and I thought Washington State would be a good kind of place
like Japan. I thought my husband might work there in several years, but he is moving there in April this year.
Now he is very busy packing everything. I am very busy preparing for the new semester. In these busy days, I
wonder what being married will be like when we are together in Washington; then I could not find the answer
yet...
3月23日 美
20日、21日と祖母のいる室蘭へと母と出かけた。 汽車(北海道では電車と
言わない) にゆらゆら揺られての旅は楽しい。 母と私は編物をしながら
乗っている。私は飽き ると読書をする。 私たちが祖母の家へ着くと祖母は
必ず玄関まで迎えに出てきてくれる。 私たちが帰 るときも必ず玄関まで
見送ってくれる。 そんな祖母はとても優しい。 だからこそ みんな祖母に
逢いに来る。 そんな祖母の心の美しさが私たちの心をつかんで離さな い
のかもしれない。
Beauty
On the 20th and 21st, my mother and I went see my grandmother in
Muroran (south part of Hokkaido). It is fun to travel by train. During the
travel, my mother and I love to knit. Well, I sometimes read when I get
tired of knitting. When we arrive at my grandmother's house, she always
come to the entrance to welcome us. When we leave, she also comes to
the entrance to say good-bye to us. She is always kind. That is why all of
us come to see her. Her aged beauty may never let our hearts go.
3月19日 卒業生
今日は進路が決まった高校三年生の生徒たちとささやかなパーティーをする。
ちょっと頑張ってバナナケーキを昨日焼いた。 この子達が5年後、10年後、みん
な どんなかな？って考えると、ちょっとわくわくする。 自分の10年後を考えると
同 じようにはわくわくしない。。。。 写真のキルトは教室にずっと飾ってある作品
の一つです。クレヨンで花びらを塗って アイロンでワックスを溶かして取り除きま
す。 洗っても色はそのままです。淡い色 でお気に入り。
Graduating Students
My students who are in the 12th grade and I will have a small party today.
Yesterday I made banana bread for them. When I imagine their future in 5 years
or in 10 years, it makes me excited -- more excited even than when I imagine
my own future. The quilt in the picture is one of my quilts in the classroom. I
colored flowers and leaves with crayons. You must get rid of the wax with a
steam iron. Even though you wash the quilt, the color does not change. These
pastel colors are my favorites.
3月18日 かわいい絵本
この時期辞書や想像力をいっぱい使って自分の言葉を英語にさせるように努力してい る。 その一つに絵本を
作ってもらう。 みんなとってもかわいい絵本が出来た。 写真のは、フリップブックの一つで、もし象がいたらお
鼻の上を滑って遊べるのに。 というところ。 とってもかわいい。
An adorable picture book
At the end of the semester, I let my students enhance their imaginations and let them write their own words in
English using dictionaries. One of the lessons is making a picture book. They made cute books. In the picture, it
is a flip book. It is sooooo cute!
ちいちゃい石けんたち
後に地元で販売する小さい石けんたち。小さな袋を一枚一枚縫うのって大変な作業、 でもとってもかわいい。無
地の生地にはタグをつけてみた。緑だったり黄色だったり 青だったり。 石けんを一つずつ入れてみると思わず
笑みがこぼれた。
Tiny bars of soap
The tiny bars of soap will be sold in my hometown in the near future. It is not easy to sew many tiny soap bags
one by one. I made tags with plain fabrics: there are green, yellow, and blue tags. When I put soap in each bag,
it made me smile.
3月17日 感謝の気持ち
ありがとうという言葉ってとっても美しいと思う。この言葉を使うのを惜しむことなんてない。 ありがとうと言われて
うれしくない人なんていない。 大人になればなるほど、人を選んでその言葉を使っているようだ。 ありがとうとい
う言葉に境界線なんてないはず。 感謝の気持ちって忘れちゃいけないって今日そう思い知らされた。 今日高校
合格をメールで知らせてくれた生徒によって。
Appreciation
The words, "thank you", are very beautiful. There is no need to limit saying it. There is no one who doesn't feel
happy to hear it. The older you get, the more we choose the people to whom we say it. The words, "thank you",
should not have a border. I really learned we should not forget to show appreciation to others by a student who
gave me an e-mail that told me he passed the high school entrance exam.
3月16日 足湯？
我が家のスノーフレイクは水浴びが大好き。 水入れに入って本人は水浴び気分。
羽 を広げて気持ちよさそう。 でもあまりにも体が大きくて実際水に浸かっているの
は 足だけ。 じゃあそれって足湯？
A footbath?
Snowflake loves to take a bath. She believed that she was taking a bath when she
was spreading her wings. However as she is too big, only her feet are in water. So,
is it a footbath?
３月15日 ホワイトデイ
昨日はホワイトデイだった。昨日ほどあんなにたくさんもらったことはない。写真の
チョコレートケーキはスポーツマンの男の子である高校生が焼いたケーキであ
る。 自分が焼いたと胸を張って渡してくれた。 まさか私がホワイトデイに手作り
チョコ ケーキをもらえるとはとジーンときた。
White Day
In Japan, as a return gift for Valentine's Day, we have White day. Basically, if the
boys and men received chocolate from girls or women, they give the girls and
women the White day gifts. Yesterday was that day. I recieved many gifts from my
students. In the picture, a male high school student who is good at playing sports
baked a chocolate cake and gave me some pieces. I had never expected to
receive a handmade cake like this, so I was touched.
3月14日 はちみつミルク石けん
もうすぐで4月だ。教材も最終的に判断する時がやってきた。 新しく入ってくる生徒さんの準備もありと色々と忙しい。 で
も週末の石けん作りはやめられない。 ブログを読んでくれた方々から”牛乳たっぷり入った石けんはいつ売られるんです
か？”と数件問い合わせがあったので先週末ももう少し作った。今度は無香料と甘い香り(エッセンシャルオイルで香り付
けした）の両方を。 牛乳を入れると匂いが悪い(無香料だと)と聞いているが、私のはトレースが出た後にたっぷり注ぐので
悪い匂いがしたことがない。 牛乳を石鹸生地に入れるとベージュ色になり、私は更にはちみつを入れるのでキャラメル色
になる。 母は牛乳石けんは白いものと思っていたので私の牛乳石けんを始めてみた時はショックだったようだ。 でも使い
心地は最高のはず。
March 14th Honey Milk Soap
April is coming soon! I must make a final decision to choose the textbooks for the new semester. I have been very busy
working for new students. However, I cannot stop making soap during the weekends. Some people who read my blog
asked me when I will sell honey milk soap, so I made more last weekend. My mother had believed milk soap would have a
white color. However mine has a caramel color, so she was shocked to see them. Well it must be great for all of us.
3月12日 文通友達
13年間ずっと続いている文通友達が二人いる。 一人はアメリカに、もう一人はドイ ツにい
る。 アメリカの友達は私が米国滞在中に逢いに行った。 しかしドイツの友 達、Ｍｉｒｋｏには
まだ逢ったことがない。 だからお互い写真でしか見たことがな いのである。 Ｍｉｒｋｏは旅行
が大好きで仕事の合間を見ていつも奥さんと色々な ところに旅している。 そして必ず旅先
から私に絵葉書をくれる。 旅先で友達に絵 葉書を送るのって簡単なことじゃない。でももらっ
た方は旅先でも自分のことを考え てくれたんだと思うととてもうれしい。 Ｍｉｒｋｏも私も互いの
メールアドレスを 知っているけど私たちは元来からの手紙で文通を続けている。もちろん手書
きで。 今回は出張でアメリカ、メリーランド州に来たようだ。夫も一ヶ月前同じように出張 で
メリーランド州に一週間滞在していた。 もし同じ時期に同じ市にいたら、お互い 私抜きで逢
えたかもと考えたら、ちょっとおかしかった。
Penpal
I have two penpals and we have written each other for 13 years. One of them is in the U.S.,
and the other one is in Germany. While I was in the U.S., I visited my penpal in MO. She was
the person who I expected. However, I have never seen the other one. We just have seen
each other from pictures over years. Mirko, my friend, likes to travel. Wherever he traveled,
he did not forget to write to me. I believe it is not easy to write to your friend during
traveling. However, the person who recieves the postcards would be happy, because she/he
can know the friend thinks about her/him. Mirko and I know our e-mail addresses, but we
always choose to write letters. Sure it needs to be handwriting. This time, he came to
Maryland in the U.S. for his business trip. Jeff was also there a month ago for his business
trip. If they were there at the same time and at the same place, they would be able to meet
each other without me. When I thought so, it was interesting.
３月９日
この時期あわただしい日々が続いている。 ４月から使うテキストを決めなければな
りません。 小学生のクラスは授業の半分しかテキストを使わないけどやはり重要、
そして年齢やレベルに合わせて選ぶので大変です。 語学は楽しく学ぶことを重要
視 している私は楽しいアクティビティーがあるテキストが大好き。でも中学校からは
志 向を変えざるを得ないけど。 地元で小さい石けん（４０ｇぐらい）を販売することにな
りそうなので小さい石けん 用の袋を週末に作った。小さな石けんを入れるととっても
かわいかった。 買ってく れるお客様も喜んでくれるといいなあ。
March 9th
I have been busy preparing for the coming semester. I must choose the textbooks. In
the elementary classes, I only use the textbooks half of the class time, however they
are important. Choosing the textbooks while considering the students' academic
levels and ages is difficult. I love to choose textbooks with fun activities, because my
philosophy of learning English includes having fun. In my hometown, I will sell small
sizes of soap, so I made many small bags. When I put soap in them, they were very
cute. I hope they will make the people who buy them happy.
3月5日 はちみつとミルクたっぷりの石けんといちごバッグ
昨日久々に牛乳をたっぷり入れた石けんを仕込んだ。花田さんのクローバーはちみつ もたっぷり入れ
た。 混ぜていておいしそうだった。 牛乳は石けん生地に入れると 独特のにおいが出るので甘いにお
いになるようにエッセンシャルオイルで香り付けし た。 使えるようになるのは一ヵ月後。 楽しみだ！
型入れまでの時間に、先日 で購入した苺のてぬぐいにキルト芯を入れてバッグを作っ
た。とってもかわいい。 フラミンゴの絵のてぬぐいも購入したのでそれを使ってどうしようかなあと思案
中。 このフラミンゴの絵とってもかわいい。私のような鳥好きにはたまらない。
Honey Milk Soap and Strawberry tote bag
Yesterday, I made soap with plenty of milk and honey. When I stirred them, it looked very yummy. When
you put milk into the soap, the smell is not pleasant, so I added sweet smelling essential oils. A month
later, you can use it. I look forward to using it. While I waited to put the soap into the molds, I made
the strawberry bag. The fabric was sold in "tenugui chaco". She handpainted the fabrics. Her painting
is very cute. I bought flamingo fabric also, so I have been thinking what I can do with this cute fabric. If
you are a birdlover, you cannot resist buying it...
3月3日 本 “くちぶえカタログ”
今日は高校入試の筆記試験日。生徒たち大丈夫かな。。と心配な私。
さてさて、週末に待ちに待っていた松浦弥太郎さんの本、“くちぶえカタログ”を読 みまし
た。セクションによって色が違う2色刷りがかっこいい。写真にあわせてエッ セイ(ここでエッ
セイと言っていいか分からないが）がそれぞれ書かれている。フェ アアイル、ビルケン、手
編みのセーター、石けんなど私の好きなものがいっぱいだっ た。 その中で随筆とエッセイ
は違うということが書かれていたが私はそのように指 摘されるまで一緒だと思っていた。
随筆を英語に直すとエッセイである。このちがい についてはこれからの私の課題である。
松浦さんはニューメキシコ州でのことにつ いても書かれていて、その部分を読むと色々な
自分の経験と重なった。そして懐かし さがこみ上げた。
“くちぶえカタログ”と“くちぶえサンドイッチ”で書かれていた松浦さんの人の手 の美しさの
表現は共感せざるを得ない。 私は人の容姿で一番手が美しいと感じる。 手にはその人
の人生が映し出されているようで、特に年老いた方の手は本当に美し いと思う。 年輪と
経験を重ねた人々の手は美の象徴である。
March 3rd The book "Kuchibue Katarogu (Whistle Catalog)"
Today is the day of the entrance exam for high school. I worry how my students will do
today. Well, over the weekend, I read "Kuchibue Katarogu" written by Yataro Matsuura.
Each picture had an essay. The book had many of my favorites: fair isle knitting, hand
knitted sweaters, Birkenstock shoes, and soap. He mentioned that zuihitsu and essays are
different. I had not known there was a difference until I read this book, and I still don't
understand it. This will be a topic to look into. He also wrote about his memories of New
Mexico. These parts reminded me of my memories of New Mexico. He also wrote about
people's hands in his two books, "Kuchibue Katarogu" and "Kuchibue Sandoicchi". I really
agree with his thoughts about it. I believe that the most attractive part of a person is
hands. Hands reflect the person's life, especially older people have beautiful hands. The
people's aged hands with their experiences are the symbol of beauty.
3月2日 冬の中の春
昨日はここで高校の卒業式だった。 町を車で通り過ぎると卒業した
生徒たちが歩い ていた。みんな笑顔で。高校までの学業を終えてこ
れから新たに学校で勉強する人、 そして社会人として一歩を踏み出
す人。 みんな希望に満ち溢れ輝いていた。 週末に母に手伝っても
らい型紙を作り、タックがいっぱい入ったバッグを作った。 春っぽい生
地で。気分は春だけど外にはどっさりと雪がある。
Spring in Winter
Yesterday was the graduation day of the local high school here. When
I drove through the town, I saw the students who had just graduated
walking with smiles. Some of them will continue to study in different
schools; some of them will be the freshman in a society. All of them
were filled with hopes. Last weekend, my mother helped me with
making a bag pattern, and I made a bag with many tacks. I used
spring fabrics. I am already feeling like spring, but outside there is
lots of snow still....
