１２月27日－31日 ニューメキシコ州での日々
December 27th - 31st At New Mexico State
シアトル空港からニューメキシコ州の南に近いテキサス、エルパソ空港へは直行便がないのでアリゾナのフィニックス空
港で飛行機を乗り換えなければなりません。 飛行機が定刻どおりに出発したり到着するのは当たり前ではないアメリカ
では空港でいろいろなハプニングが付き物です。今回はフィニックスでエルパソ行きの飛行機が何らかのトラブルがあり
飛行機自体を取り替えなければならないので他のゲートへ移動するように言われ、指定のゲートに行くと代わりの飛行
機がまだ到着しておらず、パイロットもまだ見つからない（当初のパイロットは何処？）ということで4時間も飛行機が遅
れました。エルパソには夫の両親が迎えに来てくれて、お家に着いたのは夜の9時過ぎ。姪たちはすでに眠っていて逢
える楽しみは次の日へと持ち越しになってしまいました。
トーマス家はもう一度クリスマスを迎え、たくさんのプレゼントが小さなクリスマスツリーの下に溢れるように置かれてい
てみんな揃って自分へのプレゼントを開けます。クリスマスストッキングの中にもサンタからの贈り物がぎっしりと詰まっ
ていました。 私たちが姪たちへプレゼントしたのは英語で吹き替えされたとなりのトトロと魔女の宅急便のＤＶＤでし
た。2作品ともとても気に入ってくれた様子でした。 クリスマスにはジンジャーブレッドという生姜やモラシスが入った固
焼きのクッキーとキャンディーなどでジンジャーブレッドハウスを作ったりします。 とてもかわいくてヘンゼルとグレーテ
ルのお話に出てくるお家のようです。
There is no direct flight from Seattle to El Paso in Texas (which is close to the south of New Mexico). Therefore, we
had to switch flights at Phoenix in Arizona. In the U.S. it is not always common for the flights to depart or arrive on
time. There are many happenings at airports. There was one again. At Phoenix, the plane to El Paso had a problem,
so they switched to another plane. We had to move to another gate. Then what? The other plane was supposed to
be there, but there was no plane. After the plane had arrived, they looked for the pilot (we wondered where the
previous pilot went). It became a 4-hour-delay. At El Paso Airport, Jeff's parents were there to pick us up. When
we arrived at their house, it had passed 9 o'clock at night. We had to contain our excitement until the next day.
With the Thomas family, we had another Christmas time with all the relatives. Under the small Christmas tree were
many presents. Peeking inside of the stockings for presents is also fun. We gave our nieces the DVDs : "Our Neighbor
Totoro" and "Kiki's Delivery Service". They watched them and seemed to like them. Gingerbread houses always
remind me of the story of "Hansel and Gretel". Whenever I see a gingerbread house, I start to imagine if I were in the
story.
ドロシーママに何が食べたい？と聞かれていつもリクエストするのがコーンブ
レッド。とうもろこしを粉にしたものをメインにして生地を作りオーブンで焼き上
げるコーンブレッドはとてもおいしい。裏庭ではパパがグリルでおいしいお肉を
焼いていました。 コーンキャセロールと呼ばれるディッシュやマシュマロをトッ
ピングして焼き上げたスイートポテトのディッシュもとてもおいしかったです。ド
ロシーママはこの時期になると数種類のクッキー、パウンドケーキを焼いたり
ファッジと呼ばれる甘いチョコレートを作ったりして私たちを待っていてくれま
す。 自分ではなかなか作らない食事なのでいつもここに来て食べるのを楽し
みにしています。
Mom asked me what I would like to eat. I always requested "cornbread".
Her cornbread was the first cornbread that I ate. Once I ate it, I became
fond of it. Dad cooked the great meat on the backyard grill. The corn
casserole and mashed sweet potatoes were great too. Every year, she
prepares several kinds of cookies and cakes for us. All of her dishes are just
great. As I do not have to cook these dishes, I always look forward to eating
them there.
ピーカン
裏庭にはピーカン(くるみの一種）と呼ばれるナッツのなる木が一本あ
ります。 11月の終わりに感謝祭があるのでその時期になると家族が
集まるのでみんなでピーカンの木を揺すって木からピーカンを落とし
集めるのが毎年の恒例行事だったそうです。最近ではみんな感謝祭
に集まることはなかなかできずパパが一人でピーカンの木を揺すり実
を落とし集めています。 今年12月の末になっても少しだけピーカンが
木にまだついていたのでみんなで木を揺すり残りのピーカンを落とし
ました。 たった木を揺すって実を落とす作業だけれども私にとってそ
の光景はとても幸せでかけがえのない一時のように思えました。 そ
のピーカンを使ってドロシーママがピーカンパイを焼いてくれます。
ピーカンの香ばしさがママの愛情のスパイスに一役買っています。
Pecan
In the backyard, there is a pecan tree. At Thanksgiving, they used to
shake the tree and drop the pecans for the family. However recently
it is difficult for them to get together at Thanksgiving time.
Therefore, Dad shakes the tree and gathers the pecans. At the end
of December this year, there were few pecans left on the tree. They
shook the tree and gathered the pecans together. They were just
doing that, but it was the unforgettable moment to represent
happiness. They could do it because they were filled with love. I felt
I was very happy to be one of their members. Mom makes a great
pecan pie with these nuts. The crispness of pecans has a part to
play for Mom's spices called love.
古いコーヒーメーカー
昔はこれで直接ストーブの上に置いてコーヒーを入れていたそうです。 ド
ロシーママがきれいに磨いたので再び新しくよみがえりました。
Old Coffee Maker
This was used to make coffee directly on the stove top. It has been many
years since this was sold in America. Mom cleaned it and made it look like
it was new again.
ドロシーママへの手編みのソックス
勝手に模様が出来上がるイタリアのソックヤーンが手に入り
編んでいたらママがとても気に入ったようだったのでママ用に
サイズを変えて編んであげました。 暖かくてかわいいのでと
ても気に入ってくれた様子でした。
Handknitted socks for Mom
I got the Italian yarn which creats the patterns by itself.
While I was knitting, Mom really liked them. Therefore I
changed the size and gave to her. They are warm and pretty,
and she loved them.
ラスクルーセス
私も夫もラスクルーセスに住んでいたので、多くの友達
がいます。 一日朝からラスクルーセスに出掛けて夕方
までが私の友達たち、夕方からは夫の友達たちに会うよ
うに計画を立てて一日過ごしました。
ニューメキシコでの大学時代、とても尊敬する教授、ジュ
ディーがいて、彼女から多くを学び今も自分のフィロソ
フィーに生かされています。卒業してからも私の結婚式に
来ていただいたりしました。今回も一緒にランチを食べな
がらいろいろなお話ができとても楽しかったです。
そして向かったのはいつもお伺いする大学で日本語を
ずっと教えていた辺見先生です。アメリカにいるもう一人
のお母さんといった感じで、いつも通り話に花が咲きまし
た。
学生時代毎週土曜日に通っていたのがキルト教室。ナン
シーは何年もずっと私にキルトを教えてくれた大先生で
す。 今回ショップに行くといつものようにナンシーがい
て、私の顔を見てびっくりしていました。そこで売られてい
る布はとても上質で大好きなので数点購入してきまし
た。 またナンシーに会えてうれしかったです。
ラスクルーセスにはオールドメシアという古いスパニッ
シュスタイルの小さな町があり、そこは私たちのお気に
入りの場所です。スパニッシュとネイティブアメリカンの文
化が調合したニューメキシコならではのその場所で上を
見上げるといつもの真っ青な空がありました。
Las Cruces
Jeff and I had lived in Las Cruces, so we have many
friends there. We made a plan to meet our friends in
one day. From morning till evening, we met my friends,
and we had dinner with Jeff's friends.
When I was a college student in NMSU, I had a
professor who I respect the most, Judy. I could learn
so much from her, and what I learned from her is still in
a part of my philosophy of teaching. Even after my
graduation, she attended my wedding ceremony. This
time we could have lunch together and could talk about
many things. I really enjoyed talking with her.
Then I visited the Japanese teacher, Mrs. Henmi. She
is like another mother in the U.S. We could talk about
so many things even though we only had a few hours.
When I was a college student, I went to learn quilting for
years. Nancy had been teaching me. When I visited the
shop again, I could meet Nancy as usual. She was very
surprised at seeing me there, and we could talk a little.
I bought some fabrics there too. I was very glad to see
her there.
In Las Cruces, there is a small town called Old Mesilla.
It is an old Spanish style small town which is our
favorite. It is the fusion of Spanish and Native
American cultures. There I stood, and looked up.
There was the clear New Mexico blue sky.
12月26日 バッグ
昨日25日はお家でのんびりとテレビの前で一日過ごしました。 そして出来
上がったのがこの作品です。先日購入したカラフルでポコポコとキャン
ディーがくっついているような毛糸とスラブ糸を合わせました。 もこもことし
た体にかわいく口紅をつけたみたいです。 あまりにもかわいくてもう一つ同
じのを作ろうかなあと考えています。明日からはニューメキシコ州へ行き、
家族にあったり、友達に会ったりします。 とても楽しみです。
December 26th Bag
Yesterday, the 25th, we were couch potatoes in front of the TV. Then I
could make the bag in the picture. The other day I bought the yarn with
colorful-candy-looking puffs. I use this yarn just a little bit with the white
wool yarn. It looks like a fluffy-puffy body with lip stick. It is adorable, and
I am planning to make another one. Tomorrow we will visit New Mexico
State to see our family and friends. We are excited!!
12月24日 クリスマスイブ
今日は家族にまだ買っていなかったクリスマスプレゼントを買いに行った
り毛糸ショップで面白い毛糸を購入したりした。 どのお店に行ってもクリ
スマスムードたっぷりで、店員はサンタの帽子をかぶったりクリスマスら
しい服を着ていたりして必ず帰る時に“メリークリスマス”と言ってくれる。
とても微笑ましい。日本のロマンチックなクリスマスとは違い、アメリカは
どちらかと言えば日本のお正月気分。今日も6時にはほとんどのお店が
閉まり明日は開いているお店はとても少ない。私たちは二人だけでクリ
スマスを過ごすのでお家でのんびりが定番になっている。 私たちの本
格的クリスマスは27日から31日である。27日に夫の実家があるニューメ
キシコ州に行きトーマス家みんなが集まり少し遅いクリスマスを過ごすの
である。
先日ファブリックストアーに行くとレトロな布を発見。すぐに購入し昨日レ
トロパッチの服を作りました。 黄色に黄緑、オレンジそして茶色のコンビ
の服はあまり着たことがないのでちょっとチャレンジですが、結構気に
入っています。
今日行った毛糸ショップはアメリカの毛糸だけではなくてヨーロッパの毛
糸も多く扱っていました。 すべてがとても高価な糸でしたが、その中で
ショップのバッグに使える糸を少し購入しました。かわいいバッグになる
アイデアが少し浮かんでいます。
日本は今日が25日ですね。 皆さんにメリークリスマス！！
December 24th Christmas Eve
Today we shopped for Christmas presents, and we also went to the
yarn shop. Every shop had Christmas decorations, and the clerks wore
a Santa hat or Christmas clothes. When we left, they said "Merry
Christmas" which is very nice. Compared with a Japanese romantic
Christmas, here in the U.S. they celebrate Christmas with joyful spirits
and volunteer spirits. This way of celebration makes people's hearts
warm. I think it is neat. The shops close at 6 p.m., and not many shops
open tomorrow. Jeff and I will celebrate Christmas from 27th to 31st in
New Mexico. We will visit his parents. We are looking forward to seeing
them all.
The other day, I went to the fabric store, and found retro-looking
fabrics. I loved them and bought some. Yesterday I made a retro-
patched tunic. It turned out cute, and I love it.
Today we went to the yarn shop. They carried not only American yarns
but also European yarns. They were very expensive, but I bought some
to make bags. I have some ideas to make with them. I hope I will make
cute bags with them.

12月23日 手編みの靴下
今どれくらいの人々が靴下を編むだろうか？アメリカにはソックニッ
ターと呼ばれる靴下だけを編む人々がいる。 私は靴下だけを編む
ソックニッターではないけれども、靴下を編むのは大好きである。英語
で書かれた編み方や日本語で書かれた編み方をいろいろ読んで試し
たが、母が50年前に編んだ靴下編みの方法が一番足にフィットするの
が分かり、それ以来母の編み方で編んでいる。 冬の室内履きももち
ろん手編みのブーティーである。写真は夫の手編みの靴下とブー
ティー。 毎年クリスマスには手編みの靴下をあげている。 ウール
１００％の靴下は暖かいがとても弱いのが弱点である。すぐに底が薄
くなって穴が開いてしまうのと手洗いしなければならない。 靴下は毎
日履くものだから夫にとって毎日自分の靴下を手洗いするのは大変
である。 この2つの弱点を克服したのがソックヤーンと呼ばれるウー
ルに数パーセントのナイロンを加えた毛糸である。しかも洗濯機でガ
ラガラと洗えるのである。 私の愛用しているソックヤーンはローナー
ズレイスと呼ばれる手染めのソックヤーンである。 ローナーズレイス
の糸はとてもやわらかく高価であるが長持ちする。 そして私は必ず
靴下を編む時はとても細い2号針で編む。もちろんすごく時間がかか
るが薄く履いていて気持ちがいいし細い針で編んだほうが長持ちする
のである。 手編みの靴下は夫も私も一度履いてから止められなく
なってしまった。
December 23rd Handknitted socks
How many people knit socks? In the U.S., there are the people who
are called "sock knitters". As I don't knit only socks, I am not a sock
knitter. However I love to knit socks. I tried so many different
instructions for knitting in English and Japanese. However, nothing
fits right on me. Then my mother told me the way she knitted socks
50 years ago. That was the best way to knit, and fit right on my
feet. Since then, I knit socks my mother's way. In the photos, there
are some handknitted socks and booties for my husband, Jeff. Every
Christmas, I knit a pair of socks for him. Wool 100% socks are very
warm but weak. You also must handwash them. However the yarns
called sock yarn defeated these problems. They include some nylon
in wool yarn and are machine-washable. I love to use Lorna's Lace
sock yarns. They are extremely soft and comfortable though they
are expensive. I always knit socks with #2 needles. They are very
thin needles but if you knit with them, the socks last longer and you
feel comfortable. Jeff and I cannot stop wearing handknitted socks
anymore.
12月22日 具合が。。
12月19日にアメリカに戻った。 今回はグリーンカードがあったので入管で夫と一緒にアメリカ市民の
方に並んだ。 外国人用とは違い、すんなりと時間をかけずに入国できた。 そんなうれしいのもつか
の間。アメリカに着いた次の日、北海道を発つ前の日までびっちり仕事をしていて疲れたせいか、そ
れとも飛行機で何かの菌をもらったせいか分からないが、立って歩けないほど具合が悪くなった。 食
べることもできず、トイレに行くのもやっと。 夫が薬を買ってきてくれて2日目にようやく元気がでてき
た。 その夜から少しずついろいろなことができるようになった。 ドロシーママから電話があり、具合
が悪いことを言うと“ミシンに触っちゃだめよ！”と念を押された。 具合が少しでも良くなるとすぐにミ
シンの前に座るのをよく知っているからだ。 今日もミシンには触らなかったがすぐに取り掛かれるよう
に出してセットしてある。 好きなものはやめられない。。。
December 22nd I felｔ sick....
I was back in the U.S. since the 19th. As I had my green card this time, I could go through the
immigration with Jeff. It was much faster than going through the foreign visitors' section. Next day,
I felt sick.. As I worked until the last day of being in Hokkaido, I must have been tired. Or I might
have gotten something in the airplane, I don't know. I hardly walked. I could not eat, and it was
very hard to even go to the bathroom. Jeff bought some medicine for me, and from the next day I
started to feel better. My American mom called and after she knew about my sickness, she said,
"Don't even touch the sewing machine". I did not start using it, but I prepared to sew. It is
difficult to stop doing your favorite thing...
