1月26日 うれしい贈り物
昨日 Auricula のまきさんより私の誕生日のうれしい贈り物をいただきまし
た。 かわいいキャップスリーブのブラウスです。 まきさんが作られる物は
いつも几帳面な仕上がりで大好きです。早速タートルネックの上に着ようと
思います。 まきさんありがとう！
January 26th The Delightful Present
Yesterday I got a package from Maki （Auricula). It was the blouse for my
birthday. She made it. Her sewing is always accurate, so I love them. I
will wear it with a turtleneck shirt. Thank you, Maki.
1月24日 ゼブラな靴下
先日アメリカでドイツ製ソックスヤーンＯｐａｌの新色ゼブラで靴
下を編みました。自分用に編み始めたのですが母の友達がい
つも足が寒いと言っていたので、その友達にあげることにしま
した。 気に入ってくれるといいのですが。
January 24th Zebra Socks
I bought the German sock yarn, Opal, while I was still in
Washington. It was the new color called Zebra. I started to
knit a pair of socks for myself, but as I heard that a friend of
my mother always has cold feet, I decided to give this pair to
her. I hope she will like it.
1月18日 うれちーの
家のジョイちゃんはいつも新しいおもちゃやガ
ムをもらうとうれしくてうれしくて、5分間ずっとく
わえたままみんなに見せびらかします。 その
後、このガムはすごく固いはずで長い時間か
かって食べ終えるはずが、2分とかからずに食
べ終えてしまいました。
Janaury 18th Happy Joy
My Corgi dog, Joy, got a new gum from me.
She was too happy to eat it immediately, so
she showed it off to everyone for about 5
minutes as usual. Then she started to eat.
This gum was supposed to be for strong
chewers, however, she ate it in 2 minutes......
1月15日 帰国
楽しい時間はあっという間に過ぎました。 明日はもう日本に帰国です。今回は夫が約一ヶ月間日本に来て一緒にアメ
リカに行ったので、数年ぶりに約2ヶ月間も一緒にいることができました。責任ある仕事を持ち、働くことはとても充実して
おりますが、家庭を築いた以上家族の一員として家庭を守る大切さや楽しさも結婚して分かるようになりました。 明か
りのついた家に帰る喜びや家を暖かくして家族を待つ喜びはかけがえのないものです。 外で安心して働けるようにお
家でおいしいご飯を作ったり、家族がくつろげる空間を準備してくれる人がいるのはとても幸せなことですね。家族がく
つろげるお家を守るという仕事がどんなにも重労働で、重要なことなのか、10年前の私には理解できなかったことです。
しかし今はその仕事が自分にとっての将来の夢になっています。 さて、日本の忙しい現実社会にもどります。かわいい
生徒たちに会えるのがせめてもの喜びです。
January 15th Returning to Japan
My enjoyable time passed very quickly. Tomorrow, I will return to Japan. As Jeff had been in Japan about for a
month, and as we came to the U.S. together, we could spend our time together for longer than usual. It has been
several years since we were together for so long.. Having a responsible job and working hard for it satisfied me.
However I started to learn how important and fun it is to protect the family and work in the house. The joy of
returning home with a light on or waiting for the family in home is priceless. It brings happiness to have someone who
take care of the family and house. Ten years ago being the wife at home was not what I considered for my future
happiness, so I could not have understood this joy. However, I can now, and it is my future dream. Well, I will go back
to the reality in Japan: very busy days. I am looking forward to seeing my students.
携帯ソックス
あまりにも手編みの靴下やブーティーが好きなので携帯ホルダーを作ってみまし
た。 すごくかわいいです。 次にショップに出せるように思案中です。 皆さん
どう思いますか？
Cell Phone Sock
As I love hand knitted socks and crocheted booties, I made the Cell Phone
Sock.. I think it is adorable. I am thinking about making more for the next shop
update. What do you think?
1月13日 クリスマスツリーか割り箸か
以前アメリカ人の友達とこんな討論をしたことがある。 アメリカ人の友達いわく、“割り箸は資源の無駄遣いだ”と。 私
は“アメリカ人の本物の木を切り倒して家に置くクリスマスツリーは資源の無駄ではないか？” その友達は“クリスマス
ツリーは一年に一度だけ。そして文化の象徴でもある。絶対に割り箸のほうが無駄だ”と。 私は"一本の木から割り箸
はいっぱい作れるけどクリスマスツリーは木を丸々一本切り倒して使われる。 本当の木を切らなくても人工のクリスマ
スツリーはたくさんあるではないか”と。その討論は当時長々と続いたが、正直言って、私としてはどっちも賛成できない
のである。 木を切るのは一瞬だけど大きく育つのにどれだけの年月がかかって生きているのか考えると一本でも多く
植林したい気持ちである。 二人とも共通していたのは木を愛していることだった。
January 13th Controversial issue: Christmas tree or chopsticks
My American friend and I had an argument before.
She said, "Using chopsticks is a waste of resources."
I said, "Chopping down a tree and putting it in the room for Christmas is the waste."
She said, "Having a Christmas tree is only once a year, and it is the symbol of our culture. Chopsticks are more
waste."
I said, "You can make many chopsticks out of one tree. However a Christmas tree is the whole tree for one house.
There are many artificial trees. What is the point of chopping down the real tree?"
This argument continued for a while. However, frankly speaking, I thought both uses could be wasteful. Chopping a
tree is a moment, but growing a tree takes a long time. One thing sure about this argument was that both of us loved
and wanted to protect trees.
1月12日 私も単身赴任？
岩波文庫の広辞苑の単身赴任の定義は"遠方に転勤する際、家族を伴わず一人で任地におもむくこと”となって
いる。 私の夫はアメリカで働き、私は日本で働いている。 私たちの夫婦の家はアメリカにあるので原則的に私は
家から一人で任地におもむいている。 しかしその任地は私の実家があり、私は実家から任地に通っている。 し
かし実家は私たち夫婦の家ではない。 そうなると私は単身赴任? もしこれが夫と反対の立場なら世間も単身赴
任という言葉は抵抗なく使えるであろう。ではなぜこの言葉は私には使いづらいのか？それは私が女であり、女が
家を離れて任地にいるからであろうか？ 私は単身赴任なのだろうか？
January 12th Am I Tanshin Funin?
In Japanese, there is the word, "tanshin funin". It means to work in the new post alone in a different place from
where his/her family lives. Jeff works in the U.S., and I work in Japan. Our house is in the U.S. That means I am
the person who works in a place away from home. I live in my parents' home which means I don't live alone.
However, my parents' home cannot be considered as our house. Therefore, am I Tanshin funin? This word is
usually used for male persons. If Jeff and I are in opposite situations, it might be easier to use this word. Then
why is it not easy to apply this word to me? Is this because I am a woman? Is it not acceptable that I am a
woman who is away from home? Can you say I am tanshin funin?
ラスクルーセスのキルトショップで購入したパターンを使ってキルトバッグを
作ってみました。万華鏡のように6枚の三角形を組み合わせて作ります。
I made a quilted bag using the patten I bought in the quilt shop in Las
Cruces. To make a kaleidoscope hexagon, I needed to cut the identical
triangles. It was neat.
1月12日 祝33歳
今月末に誕生日を控える私に夫がバースデイアイスクリームケーキを
買ってきてくれました。 今年も家族みんなが健康な一年であってほし
い。
January 12th Congratulations for being at the age of 33!!
Jeff bought me the ice cream cake for my birthday (as it is coming
soon). I hope all my family members will be healthy at my age of 33.
33? Another year.
1月11日 ブルーセットと柔らかマフラー
ラスクルーセスに行った時、ナンシーにいい毛糸屋さん,Unravelを教えてもらい、そ
こでブルーのモヘヤ入りのウールヤーンととても高級なアルパカとシルクが半々に
なった毛糸を購入しました。 ブルーの糸で自分用のミトン、帽子、マフラー、そして
バッグを作りました。 寒い日にとても役に立っています。 そしてとても気に入って
いるのはアルパカとシルクが入ったとても柔らかな糸で編んだマフラーです。ス
カーフのように使えて暖かで心地よいです。
January 11th Blue set and the soft scarf
While we were in Las Cruces, Nancy told me about the good yarn shop, Unravel. I
bought some blue wool mohair skeins and two alpaca/silk yarns. I made my hat,
scarf, mittens, and a bag with the blue yarn. They are very useful for winter. My
most favorite is the scarf I made with the alpaca/silk yarns. It is very soft and I
can feel the natural great cozy fiber around my neck. Sure it is very warm. I just
love it.
1月10日 毎日、雨
ワシントン州は今雨期。毎日雨が降っています。気温もそれほど寒くなく雪はほ
とんど降らないそうです。 雨が降るせいで真冬でも芝生が青いのは雪国育ちの
私にとって不思議か感じです。
ミシンが置いてあるクラフト部屋から見える一本の木は私のお気に入りです。仕
事をしていて、ふと顔を上げるとこの大きな木が見えます。 雨の音を聞きなが
らコーヒーを片手にこの木を眺める時間はとても特別に思えます。
January 10th Everyday ...raining...
It is a rainy season in Washington State. Everyday it rains. It is not cold
enough to snow here. Because of the rain, the lawn is always green. It is
strange for me who grew up in a snow country to see the green lawn in winter.
The tree I can see from my craft room window is my favorite. When I work and
when I look out of the window, I can see this big tree. The time of seeing the
tree is very special for me with the sound of rain and a cup of coffee.
Spork! スポーク！
ラスクルーセルに行ったとき、夫の友達たちと夫の会話を聞き、面白いなあと思
いました。 夫の親友と夫は同じ電子工学技師。 一人は高校の歴史の先生。も
う一人は考古学研究者。 この4人が集まり会話をしていると、それぞれ自分が
話す時、自分の専門分野を例に取り会話をしています。 そしてみんな分野が違
うのに内容を理解し、話に納得しているのは、それぞれ十分な知識があるから
でしょう。 そこに一緒に座った私はちんぷんかんぷん。 唯一内容についていけ
たのは教育学に関する分野だけでした。 しかしそこで航空会社の話になった
時、最近スポークを使う航空会社が出てきた。というのです。 スポーク？は？
Ｓｐｅａｋの過去形のＳｐｏｋｅ？いや、話の内容から明らかに名詞だ。何だ、その言
葉は？と当惑した私を見て友達が教えてくれました。Ｓｐｏｒｋはスプーン：Ｓｐｏｏｎ
とフォーク：Ｆｏｒｋが合体したもの、スプーンの先がフォークになっているもののこ
とだそうです。 私も一つ学びました。 もう一つ面白かったのは、第二言語を習
得する時、第一言語の文法を使って第二言語の単語を並べて話してしまう(たと
えばこれは美しいを英語で言うときに日本語と同じように,this beautiful isと使っ
てしまう)というところまでは私も納得。すると一人が、"それはまるで(スター
ウォーズの)ヨーダのようだ。〝と言うと他のみんなが“Ｙｅａｈ．（うん）”と納得して
いるのを見て彼らは私と違う世界に住んでいると確信した。
My new word: Spork!!
When we were in Las Cruces, it was very interesting to meet Jeff's friends. His
best friend and he are electric engineers. One of them is the high school
history teacher. The other one is a researcher of archaeology. When they
talked, they talked from their own fields' topics. They are from different fields,
but they seemed to understand and carry the conversation with each other.
Did that mean they are so knowledgeable as to understand different fields? I
guess so. Sometimes their talk was all Greek to me. When they talked about
language or education fields, I could be in the conversation. When they talked
about the airlines in the U.S., one of them said "Spork!" In my brain, this sound
was caught as "spoke" for the past form of speak. I said to myself, "Wait a
minute. From his talk, it must be a noun, not a verb! Then what the heck is
that?" I puzzled. Then he told me that "spork" means the combination of
spoon and fork. I learned something. Another interesting one was this. When
people learn their second language, they tend to use their first language
grammar to fit into the second language. I agree with that opinion. Then one
of them said, "It is like Yoda's language." The rest of them said, "Yeah." When
I saw this conversation, I could be sure that they live in a different world.
1月9日 シアトルでの一日
オリンピアからシアトルまで普段は車で一時間半ぐらいかかりますが今
回は40分で着いてしまいました。 穏やかな緑いっぱいのオリンピアとは
違いシアトルは大都会。一方通行が多く駐車場もなかなか見つからず大
変でした。 アーティストがいっぱいで有名なフリーモントではかわいいお
店がいっぱいで見ているだけでも幸せな気分になりました。ムーミンもト
ロールの一種ですが、このトロールは巨大で恐ろしい顔をしていまし
た。 鼻の中に指を突っ込んで写真を撮りたかったのですが届きません
でした。 ダウンタウンではモールに入り、Mocha Cafeでホットチョコレー
トを飲みました。 普段飲むココアとはぜんぜん違ってとてもおいしかっ
たです。
シアトルはスターバックスの発祥地。 オリンピアもそうですがたくさんス
タバがあり、外を歩いてる多くの人がコーヒーを片手に歩いていまし
た。 私たちもスタバは結構利用しております。 空港では入ってから
ゲートまでにスターバックスのブース(スタンド)が4つもあり、驚きました。
A day in Seattle
Usually from Olympia to Seattle, it takes about an hour and half, but
this time, it took only 40 minutes to get there. Compared with green
Olympia, Seattle is the big city. There are many one-way streets with
no right turns, so they made it very difficult to drive there. It was also
difficult to find parking places. Fremont district is famous for artists.
There were many pretty shops. Even just looking around the shops
made me happy. There was the huge troll statue, and I wanted to climb
up and stick my finger in his nose. However, my arm couldn't reach
there. In downtown, we stopped by the mall, and drank the good hot
chocolate at Mocha Cafe. It was very different from what we used to
drink as hot coco. We really liked it.
Seattle is the original place of Starbucks. Even though in Olympia,
there are many Starbucks, there are even more in Seattle. We saw
many people carrying coffee with them. We also liked it there. At the
airport, there were four Starbucks booths from the entrance to the
gate. Can you believe that?
