だんだんと編み目が多くなってきました。とてもやわらかくて軽いです。

3月11日 初めてのショール
先日ショールパターンと一緒に、Lorna's Lace の Helen's Lace，シルク
ウール（５０％ずつ）の糸をAngelika's Yarn Shop 購入した。色は
Ｄｏｕｇｌａｓ Ｆｉｒという濃い海の色。青の好きな私にはたまらない。 実は
ショールは今まで編んだことがない。日本は常に編み図があるが、英語
での編み方は文章が基本。 模様の編み図はついていたが、一段一
段、編み方が書いてある。 慣れると結構分かりやすい。 しかし全体像
が見えにくいのが弱点だ。このショールは3目から始めるのだが、母の助
言を聞いて始め方を少し変えた。 編物のことをよく知っている先生がそ
ばにいるのは心強い。
March 11th My First Shawl
Recently I bought a Lorna's Lace Helen's Lace yarn (silk 50% and wool 50%) and a shawl pattern from Angelika's Yarn
Shop. The yarn color is Douglas Fir. As I love blue, I couldn't resist picking this color. However I have never knitted
a shawl in my life.
In Japanese knitting instructions, it always has a chart showing how to knit. All the symbols are the same each time.
If you learn the symbols, it is easy to knit any project. However in English instruction, it is mainly written instructions
though it sometimes has a chart to show the pattern. Written instructions don't show the brief information instantly.
However, following written instruction makes it easy for me to knit. This shawl starts from only 3 stitches. However
from her experiences, she recommended not to knit from 3 stitches. So I changed the starting a little bit. As my
mother knows a lot about knitting, being around her really helps and I can learn from her a lot.

3月3日 春ひとつ
私の教室では、小学6年生以上の生徒さんに週1回、Ｄｉａｌｏｇｕｅ Ｊｏｕｒｎａｌという宿題が出される。 毎週ホワイトボード
にトピックが書かれていて、それに対しての自分の考えを英語で書くのである。 Ｄｉａｌｏｇｕｅ Ｊｏｕｒｎａｌはもちろん英語で
の作文力を伸ばす為もあるが、最も私が重要視し、目的とするのは自分がなぜそう感じるのかという自分の意見の追
及がさせることだ。それができることで、自分の意見をもつことを養ってほしいのだ。だからトピックは想像力を掻き立て
るようなものを取り上げ、意見の理由も書かなければならない。 先週のトピックは“何が自分に春を感じさせるの
か？”であった。 雪解けや桜の花など一般的な答えの中、とても美しい詩のように感じたのがあった。 それは68歳
の女性の生徒さんが書いたもので、雪国で長く暮らし、彼女の聡明さが表れたものだった。 本人の了解を得てここに
紹介させていただきます。
I like sunshine in clear blue sky in spring.
An icicle from the roof shining like a glasswork in sunshine is beautiful.
A water drop falling from an icicle is like a polkadot.
When I find wild grass from thawed snow, I feel the sense of spring.
I like seeing the change when the white canvas turns to beautiful colorful sceneries in spring time.
These things make me feel spring.
（私は春に雲ひとつない青空の太陽の輝きが好きです。
屋根から下がるつららがガラス細工のように太陽の光の中で輝きを放つのはとても美しい。
つららから落ちる水滴はまるで水玉模様のようです。
野草を雪解けの中で見つけると、春がそこまで来ているように感じます。
私は真っ白いキャンバスが春に色々な景色に変わる変化を見るのが大好きです。
こういったことが私に春を感じさせるのです。）
雪国で暮らす私たちが感じる春が手に取るように表れていて、私はこのＤｉａｌｏｇｕｅ Ｊｏｕｒｎａｌを読んで、一足先に春を感
じました。
March 3rd One piece of Spring
In my school, all the students above 6th graders have "Dialogue Journal" once a week. They are given a topic and
they must write what they think in English. Of course, it is a good practice for writing. However this is also good
practice for students to figure out why they think so and what their opinions are. This is the most important thing and
this is my purpose. Last week's topic was "What makes you feel spring?". Generally they said snow thawing or cherry
blossoms. One of my students who is a 68-year-old lady wrote like a poem. She is an intelligent and modest person
who lives in a snow country, Hokkaido. Here is what she wrote:

2月23日 文通
私の姪(夫の弟の子供たち）は現在10歳と5歳。 10歳の姪からの提案で今年から私の同じ年の生徒さんと姪とで文通
をすることにしました。
まずは 姪が私の生徒さんに手紙を書きました。 私はそれを日本に持ち帰り、とても難しいと思われる部分はあらかじ
め訳しておき、その他の部分はグループに分かれて、それぞれ私の姪が何を書いているのか辞書を使って理解してい
きました。 その後、みんなは質問された答えと自分が彼女に伝えたいことや質問を英語に直して書いていきます。 お
手紙を訳して、書き終えるまでに、3週間使いました(週に2回のクラスで）。
私はどんなテキストよりも、このプロジェクトはとても意味があるように思えています。 自分で訳してみたり、文を作って
みたりと、自分自身で自分の言葉を英語にすることはたやすいことではありませんが、自分で勉強する力になります。自
分で勉強できる子は他の教科にも良い影響を与えます。アメリカ人の自分と同じ年の子が自分に何を言っているのか、
会ったことがなく、国も文化も違ったその新しい友達に何を伝えたいのか、そういったことを第二言語で考え、書き、その
友達が喜んでもらえるように思いやりをもって手紙を送ることは何よりもすばらしい教材だと思うのです。そんな機会を
与えたくれた私の姪にとても感謝しております。
February 23rd Correspondence
My nieces are girls of five and ten. The older one asked me if she could correspond with my students who are around
her age.
First she wrote my students letters, and I brought them here. I wrote some translations of phrases that might be too
difficult for Japanese students. My students had to use dictionaries in groups to understand what she wrote. Then
they wrote to answer her questions and introduce themselves. They wanted to ask many questions of her. It took
about 3 weeks to finish writing (they come to my class about one hour twice a week).
I believe this project means a lot for my students. It is not easy for them to translate and compose sentences by
themselves in another language. However, they can learn how to study a language and know the meaning of studying.
Learning by yourself can also affect other subjects positively. Thinking about a new American friend whom you have
never met, and writing to her thoughtfully are wonderful things to learn. It is much better than a usual textbook. I
appreciate her giving them such a great opportunity. Thank you !!
2月20日 春一番
先日、みんなより一足早く、高校の合格の知らせがあった。 その子がこの春、道南(北海道の南側)の高校に行くことが決まっ
たのだ。 とってもうれしい反面、会えなくなるのかと思うと寂しい気持ちがあるのは正直な気持ちである。
3年前、耳が不自由な彼に英語を教えるのは私にとって大きなチャレンジだった。 私は手話を習ったことはなく、アメリカの大
学でスペシャルエジュケイション（特別教育）について学んだのはたったの2クラスだけ。その時学んだことを頼りに、一対一で
レッスンが始まった。幸いなことに彼はリップリーディングができたので対面して座り、大きな声ではっきり言うだけでなく、筆談も
必要だった。すぐにスペルが分かるように逆さまに英語を書く練習もして、新しい単語の発音はすべてカナをふった。 彼はとて
も賢く、スポンジのように英語を吸収して英検にもチャレンジするようになった。
普通の子は書かれてある説明などをしっかり読まずに問題に取りかかるため、勘違いしてたくさんミスしてしまうのが多いのだ
が、彼にとって目に見えるものがすべての情報源であるため、書いてあることすべてを読んでから質問に徹していた。 雑念が
なく、集中力が人一倍高かった。
日本語も普通に話し、手話もでき、そして英語も理解できる彼は多くの可能性を秘めている。 毎週土曜日の朝のレッスンはも
う少しで3年になる。 明るく、キラキラ輝くその子は、私たちには聞こえないある言語が聞こえているようだ。 多くの雑音があ
るこの社会でその音を遮断したとき、もしかしたら、私たちにも聞こえてくる音があるかもしれない。 彼には聞こえて、私たちに
は聞こえないその言語を私は手探りで探したいと思う。
自分自身をしっかりもったすばらしいその子に一歩でも近づけるように。
February 20th The gentle breeze of spring
In Japan, school starts from April. There is an entrance exam to go to a high school. That is why 9th graders need to study
hard to pass the entrance exams. One of my 9th grade students has already passed it. He will go to a high school specializing
in hearing impairments located in the south of Hokkaido. I am very happy for him, however I will definitely miss him very
much.
Because he was a student with hearing impairment, it was a big challenge for me to teach him. I have never learned sign
language. However, I took two classes for teaching special education in the university. I depended on what I learned there.
We started just he and I. We sat down face to face so that he could know what I said (fortunately he could understand by
lipreading). I talked clearly and loudly. I wrote the English spellings upside down while facing him to help him understand
quickly. I put Japanese letters above all new English words. He was like a sponge absorbing English. He is very clever.
Typical students tend not to read the directions of the exam, so they misunderstand the directions and have mistakes.
However he was different. He relied on all visual aids, so he read everything and started to answer. He had no disturbances
and could concentrate.
Now he can speak Japanese, sign language, and English. He has lots of possibilities. The class with me on every Saturday
morning has been happening for 3 years. For this bright man, it seems that he can hear the language we cannot hear. If we
shut down all the interrupting noises, we may be able to hear it too. I would like to feel the language he can hear. That way,
I may get one step closer to the man himself.
February 14th Still in my mind
“...a hundred million children are nearly starving.... And so, they do die: One every three seconds (snaps fingers) There they
go. And another one...” This is the quotation from “The Girl in the Café”. I watched this a month ago, but it is still in my
mind. It was not an American film but a British film. It was a very shocking movie, but I liked it so much.
One day, one civil servant, Lawrence, who was very lonely and just worked every day shared a table with a woman, Gina, in a
café. They started to date, and he invited her to go to Iceland with him. The G8 summit was held in Iceland, and he was
involved in it. Though she had been very quiet, she started to speak out about what she thought in front of anybody; even in
front of the representatives of the countries. As a usual plot, we suspected she was a spy. However the movie story was not
what we expected.
Lawrence finally found someone he could love, but because of her statements, he might lose his job. He had an internal
struggle. The scene when he tried to find what he really wanted was one of the great parts of the movie. When you get older,
you can act less forthrightly. Sometimes you cannot help saying something is all right even though it is not really right.
However, Gina was different. She made a moment for everyone to listen to their inner thoughts. A pure heart moved people
and could move a world decision about which you thought you could do nothing. You can do something, and so do I.
2月14日 忘れられない

go. And another one…” （約一億人の子供たちが飢えで苦しんでいます。 そして死んでゆくのです、3秒ごとに一人が亡くなっ
ています。 (指を鳴らして)ほら亡くなりました。 (3秒後) そして又一人。） これは”The Girl in the Café”のジーナの引用で
す。 一ヶ月前に見たイギリス映画ですが、未だに忘れられないでいます。 とてもショッキングで（といっても心に響くショックで
す）、最高に良かった映画です。 久々に大好きな映画の一つとなりました。
ある日とても孤独で政府の役人として仕事をすることしか知らない男、ローレンスが若い女性ジーナとカフェで相席した。 それ
がきっかけで二人はデートをするようになり、彼は政府の役人としてＧ８サミット(主要国首脳会議)のために行く出張先のアイス
ランドへ一緒に行こうと誘う。 とても大人しかったジーナだが、アイスランドへ行ってからはどんな人の前でも(首脳の前でも)、
そしてタブーとされることも、自分が正しい思ったことを堂々と述べた。 大抵ここで普通の映画としては彼女はスパイだと疑
う。 私も疑ったが、映画は予想とはまったく違っていた。
ローレンスはやっと愛するジーナを見つけたがジーナか仕事かの究極の選択をしなければならない。 ローレンスが自分自身を
問い詰め自分がいったい何をすべきかもがく場面はこの映画の見所の一つでもある。 人は大人になるといろいろなしがらみ
の中で正しくないことも正しいと言わざるを得ないことがある。 ジーナは違っていた。 彼女はすべての人に心の中にある声を
聞く時間を与えている気がします。
純粋な気持ちは人々の心を動かし、自分では絶対に何もできないと感じていた世界的問題の議論の結論にも影響できることを
教えてくれました。 私も何かできるのです。 そしてあなたも。
2月14日 Happy Valentine's Day
クラスでは子供たちにアメリカのバレンタインを教えることにしています。 私も一
人一人にバレンタインと呼ばれる小さなカードをあげたり、小学生の生徒さんたちは
自分たちで自分の家族や友達にバレンタインを作らせます。 時にはみんなが家族宛
に書いたメッセージを読んで私が泣きそうになることもあります。子供は心配してい
ることやありがとうという素直に伝えたいことを表現していました。 私も見習おう
と思います。
February 14th Happy Valentine's Day
In Japan, we have Valentine's Day on Feb. 14th and White Day on March 14th. On
Valentine's Day, women give chocolate to men to say "I like you" or "I love you". We
also have another type of chocolate called "Giri-Choco". That means obligation
chocolate. Some women HAVE TO give chocolate to their bosses or men around them.
Recently there is another type of chocolate called "Tomo-choco"an exchange of
chocolate among friends. Whether female or male doesn't matter. On White Day, the
men who received chocolate give presents in return to the women.
In my classroom, I try to teach American Valentine's Day. I give Valentines to all my
students. The elementary students made valentines for their families and friends. In the
valentines, they wrote messages in addition to "Happy Valentine's Day". I could see how
they worried or felt thankful for their families. They were so honest, and that touched
my heart.

私のＳｏｃｋｐａｌ （ソックパル：私が靴下を編んでいる相手）は短めで、ウー
ル、そして明るい色の靴下を希望している。 色々悩んだ結果、シェットランド
ウールの色々な糸を使って編み込みの靴下を作ってみようと試みている。かわ
いく出来上がるといいのだが。。。

My sockpal prefers short wool socks with bright colors. After
considering them, I decided to use Shetland wool and Fair Isle patterns
with many different colors. I hope they will come out nice...
2月3日 Sockapaloooza
先日Sockapalooozaという靴下編みが出来る人が他の誰かに靴下を編んであげて、自分も誰かから靴下をもらえるという
手編み靴下交換プロジェクトの募集があった。
世界21カ国の人々が募集し、合計606人。 その内私を含めて日本からは4人が応募した。日本からはたったの4人かと思
う反面、私のほかにも3人私のような人がいるんだと思うとちょっとうれしい気もする。
今日誰に編むかという情報をいただき、どうやって編もうか思案中である。 あげるからにはもらってよかったと思ってもら
えるような靴下を編んであげたい。 誰に編むかは分かっているが誰からもらうかはもらってからのお楽しみということで知
らされていないのである。 ちょっとしたわくわく感があり、おもしろい。 私への靴下はどこから送られてくるのだろうかと想
像するだけでも楽しい。 せっかくだから日本の毛糸がいいと思うので早速今週末毛糸を買いに行こうと思う。
February 3rd Sockapaloooza
The other day, I applied for the sock exchange project, Sockapaloooza. 606 people from 21 different countries applied
for it. There were 4 people from Japan including me. When I saw this number, I thought there were only 4 from Japan,
but I was happy to know there were three more people like me in Japan.
Alison explains about Sockapaloooza, "First, for those new to the Sockapaloooza, here's how it goes. I'll collect names,
addresses, and sock preferences from lots of people. Then, I'll assign each person another person to knit a pair of socks
for. So someone will be given your info and will knit a pair of socks for you and you'll be given someone else's info and be
knitting socks for them. And the person you're knitting for will be knitting socks for another person, and so on, and so
on..... "
Today I got the information about the person I will knit for. I would like to knit a nice pair for her. I know for whom I
knit. However, I don't know from whom I will receive socks. That makes me excited. I have been thinking how I will knit
a pair. As I am Japanese, I am planning to use Japanese yarns. I will go buy them this weekend.
2月1日 おばあちゃんの編み方の靴下
私の祖母は94歳。 母は私の祖母から靴下編みを終戦後に習った。 物がなかっ
た時代、編んだ靴下を履くのは当たり前のことで、ウールだけの靴下はすぐに穴が
開いたそうです。 そこで考え出されたのが足の甲と裏とで別々に編んで穴が開い
たら裏の部分だけを編み直すことができる編み方です。 生活の知恵ですね。今回
は自分用の靴下をＯＰＡＬのソックヤーン、ＯＷＬで、この編み方で早速編んでみま
した。 横で接ぐのでごろごろするかなあと思ったらそんなことはなくいつもの編ん
だソックスのようにとても心地よかったです。 これならかかとが薄くなる心配が減
るような気がします。
February 1st My Grandma's Way of knitting socks.
My grandmother is 94 years old. My mother learned how to knit socks from my
grandmother in the late 40's. At that time, it was the usual thing for ordinary
people to knit socks using wool. Wool socks usually do not last for a long time.
Therefore, they knit the socks in two pieces: front and back. In this way, if the
sock has a hole in the heel, there is no need to knit it all over. You can knit only
the back part of the sock, and replace it. This is the wisdom from their lives.
This time, I made a pair of socks for me with the Opal sock yarn, Owl. I knitted in
the old way. When I put the two pieces together at the sides, I thought it would
not be smooth. However it was just fine exactly as usual hand-knitted socks
feel. This way of knitting may reduce worries about the socks not lasting very
long, because I can repair them now.
