した。 肌寒い日々が続いているので早速

5月21日 靴下の糸
先日、お客様から靴下のオーダーがございました。 もちろん、私
が編む靴下は手染めの"Lorna's Lace"のソックス用の専門糸で
す。 かせでくるので、それを玉にします。 0号針で編むこの贅
沢な糸の靴下の履き心地は最高です。
May 21st Sock Yarns
I got an order for hand knitted socks. Sure I will knit her socks
with Lorna's Lace yarns. It is very rare to have Lorna's Lace
yarns in Japan. However, I love these gorgeous yarns. Socks
knitted from this yarn are very soft and comfortable. I hope she
will love them.
5月16日 再会
先週末親戚の結婚式があり、札幌に行ってきました。 結婚式では大好
きな親戚のみんなに会えることができ、そして室蘭から94歳の祖母の元
気な姿をみることができ、本当にうれしかったです。
札幌には私の親友がいます。 しかしここ2年ほど交流があまりなかった
のがずっと気がかりでした。 思い切って会う約束をして、色々なことを
話すことができ、蟠りがすっと消えることができました。 離れていても友
達は変わっていませんでした。その日の夜はその友達と会えて楽しく過
ごした時間を持つことができた感謝の気持ちでいっぱいでした。
次の日、両親と中国茶のカフェ？に入りました。 3人とも別々の中国茶
を注文し(名前は覚えていませんが）今まで試したことのない味を楽しみ
ました。 もちろん3，4種類購入いたしました。
May 16th Meeting Again
Last weekend, we went to Sapporo for my cousin's wedding. At the
reception, we saw our relatives. I was very happy to see all of
them, especially my grandmother who is 94 years old. She looked great.
Sapporo, my best friend lives there. However, we had not seen each
other for two years. I had worried about it. This time, we met and
talked a lot to each other, so my worries have gone finally. She had not
changed at all. She was what she had been. I felt thankful for having
a great time with her.
Next day, my parents and I went to a Chinese cafe. There were many
different Chinese teas. We tried some (though I don't remember the
names of the teas), and they were great! We loved them, and
purchased some.
コスモス石けん
先日、北海道新聞社から取材を受けて、私のコ
スモス石けんが記事になり、新聞に載りました。
(北海道新聞社さん、ありがとうございます。） そ
のおかげで、コスモス畑のコスモス石けんは完
売となりました。 まさか、こんなすぐに完売にな
るとは想像もしていなかった私は、しばらくコスモ
ス石けんを作っておらず、次回は6月1日の納品
まで待っていただくことになってしまいました。
大変申し訳なく思っております。
Cosmos Soap
Recently the Hokkaido Newspaper Company
printed an article about my soap. Thanks to
them, the cosmos soap in the shop at Engaru
Cosmos Field was sold out. As I had never
thought that the cosmos soap would be sold out
immediately, I had not made a lot. Therefore
the customers have to wait until June 1. I am
sorry !!
5月8日 Sockpalooozaの靴下到着！
私も先週私のSockpalに靴下を送りました。 私も私の知らない誰かからソックス
をもらうことになっていてわくわくしていたら、今日、他のSockpal, Tara からソック
ス、布、とコネチカット州の葉書が送られてきた。 ソックスは私の足のサイズに
ぴったりで私の大好きなLorna's Laceで編まれていた。色はSand Ridge. Tara,
ありがとう！
May 8th Sockpalooza Socks arrived!!
Last week, I sent a package to my sockpal. I am not sure if it arrived yet or not.
Today I got a package from the other sockpal. She enclosed beautiful fabric
(because I make bags), postcards from Kent, and the beautiful pair of socks.
The socks fit my feet so well. The yarn was my favorite, Lorna's Lace, Sand
Ridge. I really love them!! Thank you, Tara.
5月6日 The Music of Dolphins
児童文学のクラスでKaren Hesseをリサーチしたことがある。 彼
女は作品を書き上げる前に徹底した研究を重ねる。 それが私
には魅力だった。 The Music of Dolphinsを書くにあたり彼女は
Ｇｅｎｉｅのような野生児の研究、イルカの複雑なコミュニケーショ
ン、食事、そしてイルカの社会構造を勉強した。 そして、イルカ
が人間を育てることができるかもしれないという可能性を確信し
たのだという。 ストーリーの書き方にも工夫がいっぱいで、主人
公Ｍｉｌａがどんどん人間の言葉を覚えていく様子と同時に、本の
字のフォントサイズが変わってゆく。
Ｍｉｌａは、研究者たちから人間の言語を学び、人間社会を学んで
ゆく。 しかし、Ｍｉｌａは本の中でこういっている。
"I am trapped in the net of the room. In the net of humans. I
think maybe I am drowning in the net of humans." (p. 110)
"私は部屋という網のわなにかかってしまった。 人間という網
に。 この網の中で私はおぼれているのかもしれない。”
Ｍｉｌａがどのように言葉を覚え、どのように人間社会に適応して
いくのか、そしてＭｉｌａにとっての幸せとはをＭｉｌａ自信が見出し
ていくところをとても繊細に作者は表現している。 Ｍｉｌａは自然
を愛し、育った環境を愛した。 人間社会と動物社会がうまく共存
できないこの世の中、どこかの海でＭｉｌａのような子がいてほし
いと切望する。
May 6th The Music of Dolphins
I have researched Karen Hesse in a Children's Literature class
before. I liked her, because she researches and studies a lot
before she starts to write a story. Before she wrote "The Music
of Dolphins", she researched wild children such as Genie,
dolphin's complex language, their foods, and their social structure.
Then she made sure that there was a possibility for dolphins to
raise a human child. Her writing style also shows how Mila, the
main character, learned a human language. When she started to
learn a human language, the font of the letters was bigger. The
more she learned the language, the smaller the font became.
Mila started to learn language and human society. However, in the
book, she said,
"I am trapped in the net of the room. In the net of humans. I think
maybe I am drowning in the net of humans." (p. 110)
The author wrote Mila's sophisticated mind neatly and how she
learned language, how she tried to adapt to human society, and
finally how she found out what made her happy and what she
wanted by herself.
Mila loved the natural world and loved her environment where she
grew up. In this world, unfortunately, it is difficult for a human
society and an animal society to coexist. I long for the existence
of Mila somewhere in a sea in this world.

5月５日 楽しいひととき
先日高校時代のお友達と久々に会い、3人
でたくさんおしゃべりした。 Bar Pａｎａｃｈｅ
さんおいしいカクテル片手に夜中まで笑い
ました。 カクテルの名前は全然覚えてい
ませんが、私の好きなすっぱいシト
ラス系だったり、胡桃の味だったりとみんな
でおいしくいただきました。
May 5th Great Moment
I saw a few friends whom I knew since
high school. We talked and talked, laughed
and laughed until midnight at Bar
Panache We had some sour flavor drinks
which are my favorite, walnut flavor,
chocolate, etc . They were great!
However, I don't remember the specific
names for them...
5月3日 ８０ｃｍの輪針で靴下編み
0号針の８０ｃｍの輪針を見つけました。 この長い輪針でLorna's Lace sock
yarn, Sage色の糸で靴下を編んでいます。 4本の棒針より持ち運びに便利です。
May 3 Sock-knitting with a circular needle (80cm)
I finally found an 80cm circular needle of size 0. With this needle, I have been
knitting a sock using Lorna's Lace sock yarn, sage color. This needle is easier to
carry than 4 double point needles. I love it.

ドロシーママが古い石けんレシピと一緒に夫の小さかった時の古い写真を同封
してくれました。 こんなにかわいかったのにねえ、と思っています。 ドロシー
ママが作った蝶々のタッティングレースのモチーフも一緒に入っていました。
My American mother sent me a different old soap recipe, and pictures. One
photo was of my husband when he was a child. He was very cute. She also
enclosed a butterfly motif of tatting lace. It was pretty.
5月1日 風邪じゃなかった。。
週末、吐きそうなぐらい具合が悪く、頭痛がして大変だった。 29日の朝、祝日だか
ら病院に行くのもどうしようと思っていたら、夫が電話でまずは肩をマッサージして
もらったら？と言われ、いつも行っている近藤整骨院さんに行った。
近藤先生に、“あ、これは寝れなかったでしょ！”と言われ、どうして寝れなかった
のがわかったの？と思いながら“はい。”と答える私。 “これだけ凝っていたら寝
れないよ。”と言って、凝っている箇所をぐんぐんとほぐしてくれた。 すごく痛い。す
ごく痛いけど、その後1，2週間楽な状態が続いてくれる。 素人では届かない奥の
方の凝りに届いてくれる感じなのです。 そして、えっ！これでいいんですか？
というくらい安いんです。 これからも近藤整骨院さんへの通いは続きそうです。
その日の午後、近藤先生のおかげで私はすっかり元気になり、バッグを一つ仕上
げることができました。 作り終わると約束していたお友達と焼肉も食べて、具合が
悪かったのがうそなくらい元気に過ごすことができました。 近藤先生、ありがとうご
ざいます。
May 1 I thoughｔ I caught a cold...
Last weekend, I felt sick and had a headache. April 29, it was a national holiday
in Japan, so I hesitated to go see a doctor. My husband said on the phone, "How
about going to see your osteopath?" I decided to go see my osteopath, Mr. Kondo.
When he started to massage my shoulders, he said, "You couldn't sleep well last
night, could you?" "No," I answered thinking how did he know that? He said,
"Your shoulders are so stiff, there is no way to sleep."He was right. I could not
sleep last night. His massage is very painful. However, it reaches to the deep
tissue, so your muscles can relax and it lasts for a couple of weeks. The cost is
very cheap too. I really like the massage even though it is very painful.
That afternoon, thanks to my osteopath, Mr. Kondo, I could finish making another
bag. I also went to a barbecue with my friends. I could enjoy the day. Thank
you, Mr. Kondo!!
4月29日(金） ポンチョ
やっと遠軽も暖かくなり、ジョイとのお散歩も楽しんでできる
ようになってきました。ショールが編み終わったので、簡単
なポンチョを編むことにしました（Easy Lace Poncho from
Knitting Pure and Simple）。 目数が変わらず針の号数が3
回変わるだけです。 とっても簡単です。 糸は私が大好き
なLorna's Lace のウール１００％、Sage色です。 寒がりの
私はなかなかウール物とおさらばできずにいます。。。
April 29th Poncho
Finally, spring has come! Now I can enjoy walking my dog,
Joy. I finished knitting the shawl, so I started knitting a
poncho (Easy Lace Poncho from Knitting Pure and
Simple). It is soooo easy. There is no increasing stitches.
You just change the needles to bigger sizes three times. I
used the sage color of Lorna's Lace yarn. It is getting
warmer, but I feel cold. So I cannot say good-bye to wool
clothes yet...
4月24日 新作バッグ
週末にバッグ一点出来上がりました。 5月中にはバッグのページ、ＵＰしたいと思
います。 このバッグの名前は雨です。 裏地が鮮やかな青で表地はリネンです。
いっぱいステッチしてあります。
April 24th New Bag !
Last weekend, I finished making one bag. I hope I can update the craft
shop page next month. This bag's title is Rain. The inside lining fabric is bright
blue, and the outside fabric is linen. I stitched a lot by hand on this bag..

4月１７日 頭の中の変な数字
アメリカの家の電話番号は日本にいる時に毎日かけるので日本語で覚えている。番号を言うと電話をかけるように指ま
で動いてしまう。 そうすると、アメリカで(書類などのため）電話番号を訊かれると、すぐに英語で出てこない。頭の中
で日本語から英語に置き換えなければならない。 その反対で、アメリカに住む人々はソーシャルセキュリティーナン
バーという一人一人9桁のナンバーがある。 私のその番号はもちろんアメリカ滞在中に使っていた番号なので英語で
覚えている。夫の以前の電話番号も英語で覚えている。 日本語でその番号を聞かれるとすぐに日本語では出ない。
私の頭の中で英語から日本語に置き換えてから言わなければならない。 私にとって番号は暗記する時に英語か日本
語か、どこでよく使うのか考えてから暗記すべきだと思った。 今のアメリカの家の番号を日本語で覚えたのは失敗だっ
た。
April 17th Strange numbers in my head
I memorized my husband's telephone number in Japanese. As I call him everyday, when I say the numbers, my finger
moves. When I was in the U.S., if someone asked me the telephone number to fill out a form, I could not say the
numbers in English immediately, although I can say them in Japanese. I translated them from Japanese into English in
my head, then I could tell. On the other hand, when I was in the U.S., I memorized my social security number and the
old telephone number in English. When someone in Japan asked me these numbers, I could not say them immediately.
I translated them from English into Japanese. I realized I must think where the numbers will be used the most. Then
I can decide which language to use for memorizing. I memorized my American telephone number in Japanese. That
was an error...
4月16日(月） ちくちくのハンカチ
以前ドロシーママ(夫の母）よりビンテージのリネンハンカチをいただきました。縁どりもホワイトワークの刺繍もすべて手
刺繍です。 とっても薄いリネンなのでくたくたな上に穴も2，3箇所ありました。 しかしこのハンカチとても軽くてやわらか
いのでとても使いやすく、手に馴染みます。 穴はちくちくと縫ってふさぎ、これからも大活躍です。
April 16th Hand stitched Hankerchief
Dorothy gave me a vintage hand stitched hankerchief before. It is made of thin linen fabric. It was used and a little
damaged. However, as it was used so much, it became very soft. I love it. I mended the holes, and I carry it with me
everyday.
4月15日 私の贅沢
最近編んでいたLorna's Lace（Baltic Sea color）のソックスが出来上がりました。
最高のソックヤーンを0号針で編んだ履き心地はとても柔らかで温かです。 長い時
間かかって編んだこの靴下を履くのは私にとって小さな贅沢となりました。 きっと
洗っては履き、洗っては履き、と繰り返すことでしょう。
April 15th My Luxury
I finished knitting socks with Lorna's Lace sock yarn (Baltic Sea color). I love Lorna's
Lace yarns, so it became a great comfortable pair of socks. It took me a long time to
finish this pair, so I love them more. I will quite often repeat this with them: wash and
wear, wash and wear, .....
4月12日 いろんなオレンジ
先日大人のクラスの生徒さんがオレンジを持って来て下さいました。全部違った種類
で日本女性の名前が付いたものもありました。 私も一ついただき、そんな名前のつ
いたこのオレンジを見て、どんな味だろうと食べるのをとっても楽しみにしておりま
す。 きっと繊細な味なのかなあと想像しております。

One of my adult students brought some oranges. Each orange is a different type.
Some of them had the names of Japanese ladies. I got one, and have wondered
what it would taste like. It may have a little delicate taste...
4月11日 ふわふわ巾着
遠軽コスモス畑のショップ用にコスモスプリントの生地をアップリケして、Cosmos
Field in Engaru というネームを貼り、ドロシーママからいただいた数十年前のア
メリカビンテージボタンを一つ一つつけました。 生地はダブルガーゼなので肌に
やさしいふわふわしたかわいい巾着が出来上がりました！
April 11th Soft Drawstring Bag
For the shop at Cosmos Field in my hometown, I made some soft drawstring
bags. I put a patchwork piece with cosmos printed fabric, a name tag printed
with "Cosmos Field in Engaru", and a vintage button Dorothy gave me on each
bag. The fabric of the bag is double gauze, so it is very soft and light.
4月10日 ショールと靴下
ショールは本当は7号針で編むところを私は5号針で編んでいるので、まだ終
わっていない。 後10センチはほしいところだ。 靴下のほうは最初Jaywalker
と呼ばれる編み方で編んでいたがこれまた私は0号針を使って編んでいるため
きつすぎて足が入らずいつものメリアス編みに変更した。ソックヤーンの糸は
Lorna's Lace の Baltic Seaという色です。
April 10th Shawl and Socks
I was supposed to knit this shawl with size 7 needles; I used size 5 instead on
purpose. Therefore I haven't finished it yet. Actually I need to knit about 10
cm more. About the socks, first, I knit with Jaywalker pattern . Because I used
size 0 needles, it was too tight. So I changed to a usual plain sock style. The
sock yarn is Baltic Sea from Lorna's Lace.
4月8日 何ができる？
先日、北海道オホーツク海岸で多くの海鳥の死骸が見つかりました。それ
らは原油流出による海の汚染が原因でした。2000年、オーストラリアのフィ
リップ島に住むとても小さなフェアリーペンギンが原油流出による海の汚染
で多くのかわいいペンギンたちが傷つき、そのためボランティアの方々が世
界中にペンギンの手編みのセーターを応募しました。 なぜペンギンにセー
ター？と思うと、主に2つ理由があるそうです。 油まみれになってしまった
鳥の羽毛はウォータープルーフではなくなり、体温が下がり死に至ること、
もう一つは羽づくろいするので口から毒性の強い油を摂取して死に至るか
らです。 セーターを着ることでこの2点が防ぐことになり、羽毛が完全に綺
麗になるまでの間陸でリハビリに使われるそうです。 当時セーターは
15,000以上集まり、今では応募していないようですが、万が一同じようなこ
とがあるときのために貯蔵しているそうです。 人間が自然界にしてしまっ
た悪事を人間の手がセーターという愛ある形で少しでも償えるのはうれし
いことです。 一北海道人として、私もオホーツクの海鳥たちに何かしてあ
げたいと切実に思っています。

April 8th What can we do?
Recently, many seabirds were found dead on the beaches of the Sea of
Ohotsk. It was caused by oil spills which polluted the sea. In January,
2000, there was pollution from oil spills near Phillip Island in Australia.
Many penguins were at risk. The volunteers asked the people in the world
to knit sweaters for the penguins. Why does a penguin wear a sweater?
There are two main reasons. One is to keep them warm (their feathers
are waterproof but because of the oil, their body temperature goes down),
and the other is to protect from swallowing toxic oil by preening their
feathers. Therefore, the sweaters can help, and were used for
rehabilitation on land. At that time, they collected more than 15,000
sweaters from the world. Now the project has finished but they keep these
sweaters in case there is another pollution. Once humans did the wrong
thing to nature, other human hands did make up for it by knitting sweaters
with love. That is nice. As a person who lives near Ohotsk, I would like to
help or do something to save seabirds.

4月7日 不透明な心
別れと出会いが重なり合うこの季節、心の
中はすっきりと透明にはなれません。 心
が早く桜色になれるように、目の前にある毎
日のことを一つ一つこなしてゆこうと思
います。 心の窓の外に早く色とりどりのお
花が咲くことを願っています。
April 7th Opaque mind
There are many separations from
acquaintances this season in Japan, so
you cannot have a clear mind. I need to
do the tasks in front of me everyday, so
my mind will be clear. I hope spring
flowers will bloom soon when I look out of
the window of my mind..
4月4日 (火） 春どこ？
昨日は吹雪でした。 4月になり新学期も始まりま
す。 でも遠軽町は吹雪でした。 桜が咲いてい
るというニュースを横目で見ながら、私たちは雪
かきです。 春が遠くに感じます。 日曜日久々
にサロマ湖の目の前にある温泉に行ってきまし
た。 写真はその時のです。 綺麗な青を見ると
心まで洗われました。
April 4th Where is Spring?
Yesterday we had a snowstorm. In Japan April
is the month to start a school year. It must be
spring. While seeing the news about blooming
cherry blossoms on the main island, we had to
shovel snow. We feel spring is far away there
still. On Sunday we went to the spa in front of
Lake Saroma (the pictures are from there).
Seeing the stunning blue seemed to wash my
mind also...
4月4日 コスモスの何か
コスモス柄の生地を一年かけて、ようやくニューメキシコ州で見つけました。 遠軽
は大きなコスモス畑があり、コスモスを使った石けんや小物が私の今年の課題でし
た。 去年いっぱい集め、乾燥させたコスモスの花びらを今年ははちみつと一緒に石
けんにまぜてコスモス石けんを作っています。 小物はパッチワークの技術を生かし
色々と思案中です。 写真がパッチワークの技術の一つ。最初に四角くミシンをかけ
てからカットすると簡単にパッチワークができます。
April 4th Something Cosmos
I had been looking for a fabric with a cosmos flower print for a year. I
found one in New Mexico in January. In Engaru, there is a big cosmos field. I
had to make something with cosmos this year. Now I am making soap with honey
and dried cosmos petals. I am making something with cosmos patchwork.
Here is one of the patchwork techniques. This way you can save your time putting
small pieces together.
