8月15日(月） オリンピア、またね
そろそろオリンピアから離れる時が来た。 とっても寂しい。 日本に帰ったら
また忙しい毎日に戻るだろう。 通常の日々に戻るまでが辛いのだ。 週末は
またファーマーズマーケットに行ったらマルベリーが売っていた(写真上）。 と
ても甘くておいしかった。 日曜日にショップをオープンする。 今回はバッグも
一点ずつだが以前よりも数が多く、秋色を意識した。 ソープショップの方でも
写真のようなビンテージリネン、ビンテージコットンで作った小さな巾着、そして
ミニソープをセットにしたアメリカンビンテージセットも販売予定です。 ビンテー
ジリネンはすべて手刺繍がされているものばかりです。土曜日にはショップも
ＵＰできると思います。
August 15th (Mon.) See ya, Olympia
It is time to go back to Japan! I started to feel sad. After coming back to
Japan, I will be busy again. I know this sad feeling will continue until my busy
usual days come back.... During the weekend, we found mulberries. They
were sweet and good. I will open my web shop on Sunday. I will sell some
American Vintage Sets: linen with embroidery, a small draw string bag, and
two mini bars of soap. I made some bags to sell also. I will update the
pages on Saturday.
8月9日 大好きなフランネル
小学校高学年からパッチワークが好きで本を買ってきてはいろいろ試して
いた。母はいろいろな手芸をしたがパッチワークはしたことがなかった。本
だけを頼りに少しずつキルトの世界に入っていった。ニューメキシコ州で大
学生の時土曜日はキルト教室に通い詰めた。3年半土曜日は朝から夕方
までキルトの日だった。テストが近いと行き帰りの徒歩を暗記の時間に費
やした。おかげでいろいろなアメリカンキルトを習うことができた。たくさん
作った中でフランネルのキルトはお気に入りの一つだ。 やわらかくて肌さ
わりがよく暖かい。 冬用のソープバッグをフランネルの生地で作った。 さ
て、この気持ちいいフランネルにどんな石けんを入れようか？
August 9th My favorite flannel
Since I was in the 5th grade, I was very interested in patchwork and
quilting. Even though my mother liked many kinds of crafts, she had
never done quilting. I had no one to ask about quilting, so I bought some
books and learned. When I was a college student in New Mexico, every
Saturday I spent my time from morning until sunset in the quilting classes
for three and half years. Thanks to that, I could learn many kinds of
American quilts. I made many quilts. One of my favorite is a flannel quilt.
Flannel is very soft and warm. I made soap bags with flannel today. What
kind of soap should be in the cozy flannel?
8月8日 食事の支度
一人暮らしが長かったとはいえ最近は年に2ヶ月の主婦なので失敗することも
結構ある。 カブを先日見つけたので浅漬けを作ってみたが塩が足りなくてま
ずくなりチャーハンに入れたらよくなった。 酒蒸しに日本酒がなかったのでワ
インを入れてみた。上のスプリットピーと呼ばれる黄色いお豆、ケールと呼ば
れるカルシウムが豊富な野菜、たまねぎ、ニンニク、牛ひき肉をトマトソースで
煮込み、オレガノとクローブ、塩、チリパウダーで味付ける。ご飯と食べる前に
ライムを搾り、玄米と一緒に食べるとおいしい。
August 8th Preparing meals
I can be a homemaker only two months a year, so I try to cook a lot while I
am here for Jeff. However I sometimes fail too. I made pickles the other
day, but the salt was not enough. It was not a good taste, so I chopped and
put it in the fried rice with sesame seeds, dried shrimp, and eggs. I cooked
split pea with onion, garlic, kale, and ground beef with tomato sauce. I
seasoned it with salt, chili powder, oregano, and clove. If you twist lime on it,
it tastes great. It is good with brown rice. Try one!
8月7日 ビンテージヤーン
先日近くに住むニッターのおばあちゃんから数点毛糸を購入した。彼
女の持っている糸は早くても40年前のものでヨーロッパ製品が多かっ
た。スイス製、イタリア、フランス、西ドイツ製と面白い。写真のバッグ
は購入したビンテージヤーンで編んだものだ。この糸はラベルがなくど
このものなのか、繊維は何なのか分からない。一つだけ分かるのは
40年前以上のものというだけ。 編みづらい糸だったけどネップがあ
り、糸に味がある。そのため古き良き時代のエッセンスがバッグに加
わったようだ。次回のショップにUP予定です。
昨日ファーマーズマーケットに行き野菜や果物をたっぷり買った。ス
モークサーモンも買ったので今日昼に早速パスタにして食べた。とて
もおいしかった。
August 7th Vintage yarns
I bought some interesting yarns from a neighbor. She used to be a
great knitter. Her yarns were from Europe: Italy, France,
Switzerland, and West Germany. All of the yarns were more than 40
years old. In the photo, I made a basket bag with her vintage yarn.
That yarn did not have a label, so I don't know what it is made of. It
was not easy to work with this yarn, but as it has interesting naps,
the bag hinted at a history of good old times through the yarn. I will
add this bag for my next update.
Yesterday we bought many vegetables and fruits at the farmers'
market. As we bought smoked salmon, I made pasta with it. It was
great.
7月31日ー8月5日 ケンタッキー州にて
日本人にケンタッキーと言えば多くの人々がKFCを思うでしょ
う。 アメリカ人にとってケンタッキーと言えば馬を思うようで
す。 年に2，3ヶ月しか逢えない私たちなので私の滞在中、夫
がケンタッキー州に出張があり、私を連れて行ってくれました。
もちろんケンタッキーに来たのでKFCに行きました。私たちは
旅行すると地元の食べ物を食べることにしています。ローカル
なレストランを教えてもらい食べ歩きました。 同じ名前の食べ
物であっても味付けがぜんぜん違っていたりするので同じアメ
リカとは言えやっぱり広いなあと感じました。各州それぞれ色
があり、言語学上方言が発生するように食べ物も変わってくる
ようです。 夫が仕事中は私はずっとバッグ作りに専念してお
りました。 私たちはルイビルという町に滞在し緑豊かな町で
太く大きな木がいっぱいありそれらを避けるように家が建って
いました。 植物と人間が手を取り合いうまく共存しているかの
ように見えました。とても美しい町でした。
July 31st-August 5th
When talking about the state of Kentucky, Japanese think
"KFC", and Americans think "horses". As Jeff and I can see
each other only a few months a year, he took me there even
though it was his business trip. As we were in Kentucky, sure
we went to KFC. Whenever we travel, we always want to try
local foods. His co-workers told him about some restaurants
to visit, so we went there. Even though the foods had
familiar names, the seasonings or the ways of cooking were
different. Even as the same language may have a dialect in
each state, foods in each state may also be different. While
he was working, I was making bags. We stayed in Louisville.
It has many trees, and the houses were built avoiding the big
trees. It looked as if the people lived in harmony with
nature. It was very beautiful.

エスカレーターで出発ロビーのある二階へ上がると優し
い朝日の中にワイヤーワークの天馬を見た。 これを見
た時、ここに来て本当に良かったと思った。

When we got on the escalator to the second floor for
departure, we saw the wire-work horse in the gentle
morning light. I was very glad to come there when I saw
it.
7月30日 ファーマーズマーケット
ファーマーズマーケットは朝市のようなものです。新鮮な野菜、フルー
ツ、魚介類、ハーブ、そしていろいろなクラフトが勢揃いで週末に開か
れます。 今回は明日からケンタッキー州に行くので今日食べる分の
黄桃、チェリー、パスタに入れるチーズ、ラベンダーを買いました。(写
真はラベンダーの花です）。
最近右手がずっと痛いので2，3日編むのを止めてパッチワークのス
カートを作ってみました。 帽子とカーディガンは2，3年前に編んだも
のです。 小さな手まりバッグを持っていったのですべて手作りの格
好でファーマーズマーケットに仲間入りしました。
July 30th Farmers' Market
In the farmers' market, we bought some yellow peaches, cherries,
cheese for our dinner pasta, and lavender.
My right hand has been hurting for a few days, so I stopped knitting,
but I made a skirt for myself. The bonnet and the cardigan in the
picture were made a few years ago. As I hold my little ball bag, I
joined in the farmers'market with all my handmade clothes on.

7月24、25、26日 Ocean Shores
7月２４日が結婚記念日だったので夫が休暇を取って避暑地の
オーシャンショアーズで過ごした。 オーシャンショアーズは太平洋
に面する半島にある小さな町で多くの人々がバケーションに来
る。 泊まったホテルは全室海側に面していて広いキッチンやリビン
グルームがあり自分たちで食事の支度ができるようになっていた。
いつもは目の前の海の反対側の岸辺にいるはずの自分がもう一つ
の岸辺から太平洋を見て、自分の未来が目の前の青い海によって
宣告された気がした。低木の緑と青い海、真っ白いカモメたちや茶
色い砂、すべてが青空や灰色の空、そしてモンスターフォグと呼ば
れる霧を奏でる天に静寂の中で任されているようであった。 一日
に何度も浜辺へ足を運び天候によって変化する海や風を感じた。
そんな風に時間を過ごすと忙しさの中に身を置いていた自分自身
の心に安らぎを与えることができた。 ここは心から大好きな場所
になりまた来年来ようねと約束した。
July 24th-26th Ocean Shores
July 24th was our wedding anniversary, so Jeff took a vacation to
go to Ocean Shores. Ocean Shores is a small town which is on a
peninsula facing the Pacific Ocean. All the rooms of the hotel we
stayed in faced the ocean. It had a large kitchen and living room,
so we could cook by ourselves. I had always seen the Pacific
Ocean from the opposite shore. Now I was standing on the other
side of the ocean. I felt my future was set by the blue ocean.
Green shrubs, blue ocean, pure white seagulls, and brown sands
were swept by the sky with pure colors of blue, grey, or the fog
called "fog monster" in the stillness. We went to the beach many
times to feel the water and wind with the changeable weather. In
these days, I could feel a peace of mind in my core where before I
had put myself in busy days. I really loved being there, and we
promised to come back there next year.
博物館にて
キリンビールの瓶に入った手紙がここオーシャンショアーズに着い
たようだ。 その手紙は十島村立平島小中学校の一人の生徒が書
いたものらしい。 小さい頃海に手紙の瓶を投げ入れたらどこか
の国の人がそれを拾ってお友達になれるかなあと思っていた。 実
現したその功績を目前としてやっぱり夢を信じるべきだと思った。
Interpretive Center
There was a letter from Japan at the center. It was in the bottle
that was thrown into the ocean. It floated from Japan to Ocean
Shores. When I was a child, I dreamed about making friends if I
threw a letter in a bottle into the ocean. When I saw this fact in
front of me, I thought you should believe in your dream.

こんな風にビーバーが展示してあった。家のコーギのジョイちゃ
んももしかしたらこんな感じなのかな？

A beaver was displayed in the center. I wonder if my Corgi dog,
Joy, might be like this....
毛糸
Ocean Shoresで唯一の毛糸屋さん発見！
購入したのはカリフォルニアで作られてい
るレアな毛糸。とってもかわいいバッグが
できそうです。
Yarns
There was only one shop that carried
yarns. These were made in California. I
am planning to make cute bags with them.
7月2３日 リトルハウス
成田からシアトルまで直行便があるので今回は
乗換えがなくとても便利だった。 エアポートから
オリンピアまで車で約一時間半で到着。 緑が多
いと有名なオリンピアはその通り緑が多くきれい
だった。 お家もニューメキシコとはぜんぜん違い
ヨーロッパスタイルの家が多い。 北海道の夏の
ように肌寒く私にとって歓迎されているようでとて
も心地よかった。
July 23rd Little House
It was not difficult for me to arrive in Olympia
from Tokyo because there was a direct flight.
Olympia is famous for evergreen trees. It was
true, and it looked like Hokkaido also. The
houses were very different from New Mexico
ones even though they both are in the U.S. The
weather is cool like Hokkaido summer, so I felt
like I was welcomed.
早朝
時差ぼけのため朝早くに起きてしまうので
お庭で朝5時にミルクティーを飲んだ。寒い
朝の新鮮な空気と共に飲むミルクティーは
最高だった。
ドロシーママよりいろいろな物が送られて
きてその中にママのお友達の古いビンテー
ジボタンがたくさん入っていた。いろいろな
ものに活躍できそうです。
Early Morning
Because of the jet lag I woke up very very
early in the morning. Jeff and I drank
good hot milk tea in the garden. It was a
great taste with fresh morning air.
Mom sent us the package with many
goodies. One of them was the bag of
many old buttons from her friend. I loved
them and I will use them for many projects.
見ーつけた！
タコマですばらしい毛糸屋を見つけた。靴下のための
ソックヤーンがあったり、私の大好きな手染めされた
ローナズレイスの毛糸やシェットランドウールなどいろ
いろな毛糸がたくさんあった。 もちろん数点購入。冬
はショップに手編みの靴下もいいかも。
Found!!
I found the great yarn shop called Lamb's Ear Farm
in Tacoma. There were many different kinds of
yarns. I found my favorites: Shetland wool yarn, and
Lorna's Lace yarn. I am sure that I will come back
there again, because there were many interesting
yarns.
