アイルランドの旅 その１
July 29th Philadelphia Airport
We needed to switch airplanes in Philadelphia. As usual, the flight schedule
showed "3 hours delayed". Jeff and I were not surprised at it, because we had
been through things like this so many times. After three hours, the sign showed
1more hour delayed. We started to get tired after the long flight from Seattle
to Philadelphia. After a while, at 2 a.m., they cancelled our flight to Ireland. All
of the passengers were tired and angry. At 2 a.m., we had to look for a hotel to
stay one night. If I were alone with this happening, I would cry a lot and have
no idea what to do. Fortunately, I was with my husband who could understand
the situation and knew what to do. However, as you can imagine, almost all the
hotels were fully booked. After calling so many hotels, we could find only one
hotel which still had a room. When we arrived at the hotel, it was 3 a.m. Jeff
called the rental car place and the hotel where we were supposed to stay in
Ireland to cancel. We were sooooooo tired, and slept like a stone until 2 p.m.
the next day.
7月29日 フィラデルフィア空港にて
シアトルからアイルランドに行くにはフィラデルフィアで乗り換えなければならな
い。 いつものアメリカのフライトのように、乗り換えゲートに行くと、3時間遅れ
と表示されていた。 夫と私は何度もこんなことがあるので、3時間遅れなど驚き
もしなかった。 空港内をいろいろ歩き回り、3時間後ゲートに行くと、もう一時間
遅くなるとのことだった。 そして、ぐだぐだしているうちに、なんと夜中の2時。そ
してアナウンスが流れ、フライトはキャンセルになったとのこと。 ホテルは自分
たちで電話して行ってくれとのことだった。 搭乗するはずだった乗客たちは（も
ちろん私たちを含めて）疲れと怒りでいっぱいだった。 もし私一人だったら、どう
していいかわからず、泣きわめいていたにちがいない。 幸運にも、沈着冷静な
夫と一緒だったので、すぐに空港近くのホテルに電話をし始めた。 夜中の2時、
空港近くの週末。 軽く予想できるように、ほとんどのホテルは満室。 何軒も電
話をかけ続けた末にやっと、一軒部屋があるホテルを見つけた。 私たちがホテ
ルに着くと、時はすでに夜中の3時を回っていた。 夫はすぐにアイルランドの宿
泊予定だったホテルやレンタカーにキャンセルの電話を入れた。 すごく疲れて
いた私たちは次の日の午後2時まで死んだように熟睡した。
July 30th Still in Philadelphia
We had to stay in this airport until 10:00 p.m. You see we lost a whole day from
our trip in the airport. While waiting for the flight, I finished reading a whole
book and regretted not bringing yarns to knit. The air plane company paid two
dinners (the day before and this day), hotel fee, and cab fee. However, as we
lost a whole day from our precious vacation time, we were not happy. At
least, on this day, we could go to Ireland.
7月30日 まだフィラデルフィア空港
この日、私たちは夜の10時までこの空港にいた。 大切なアイルランドの旅の一
日が台無し。 フライトを待っている間、もちろん本一冊読んでしまい、編み物を
持ってくればよかったと後悔していた。 航空会社は前の日とこの日のディナー、
ホテル代、そしてタクシー代もすべて払ってくれた。 それでも丸一日無駄にした
ことに憂鬱だったが、少なくともこの日はアイルランドに向かうことができた。
July 31st IIIIIIIIreland!! But our car is......
Most of the people in Ireland drive manual cars. Therefore, there are few
automatic cars. At the rental car counter in the Dublin airport, as we did not
show up the day before, there was no automatic car without any damage. The
people of the car rental agencies say most of the automatic cars come back
with damage. Damage???? Why???????? We thought.
They explained:
Who rents automatic cars? Americans!
On which side of the road do Americans drive? They drive on the right side of
the road which is opposite from Ireland.
That is why many of them tend to damage the cars.
Anyway they referred us to another rental company which had one automatic
car. We ended up paying more.....
7月31日 アイルランド到着！ でも車が。。
アイルランドでは、ほとんどの人がマニュアル車を運転するらしい。 オートマ
チック車はほとんどない。 空港のレンタカーのカウンターに行くと、昨日から予
約していたオートマチック車がないという。 オートマチック車は少ない上、帰って
くるとほとんどいつもダメージを受けていてすぐに貸し出せないというのだ。 ダ
メージ？ なぜ？ 店員はこう話してくれた。
誰がオートマチック車を借りる？ アメリカ人。
アメリカではどっち側の道路を運転するの? 右側（アイルランドは左側）
だからオートマチック車のほとんど全部がダメージを受けてもどってくるのだと
か。
とにかく、予約していたレンタカー会社にはオートマチックがなく、結局ダメージを
受けていないオートマチック車が一台あるもう一つのレンタカー会社に移され
た。 結局当初予約していた代金よりもずっと高くなってしまった。
Dublin Trinity College: Old Books
Trinity College is famous for their old library. It has 200,000 books in the Long
Room, and it has one of the oldest books in the world: The Book of Kells. In the
Long Room, there was also "Gulliver's Travels" written by Jonathan Swift.
When you go in the Long Room, you can smell "old books." The smell has a
long history, and tells us how Irish people cared about education. Usually
sight is the strongest sense. However, at that moment, the smell gave me the
most powerful impression of the history of the Irish. The smell itself was a
message.
ダブリン トリニティーカレッジの古書
トリニティーカレッジは20万冊を収容するオールドライブラリーで有名だ。 そこに
は、世界でもっとも古い書のひとつとされるケルズの書（4つの福音書）がある。
ロングルームにはジョナサン・スウィフトによって書かれた“ガリバー旅行記”も展
示されていた。 ロングルームに入ると、古書のにおいに気づく。 そのにおい
には長い歴史が感じられ、どれだけアイルランド人が教育を大切にしていたの
かを教えてくれているようだった。 百閒は一見にしかずというように、たいてい
五感のうち目で見ることは一番印象に残るものだが、この時ばかりはアイリッ
シュの歴史の力強い印象を古書のにおいが運んできてくれた。 それはまさに私
に伝わったメッセージだった。
Roundwood House -- Old Irish House
After one hour and 15minutes drive from Dublin, we arrived at "Roundwood
House." We found this place on the Internet, and we just loved it so much.
Staying there became one of the purposes for this trip. The house was built in
1730s. It was surrounded by woods. They had two dogs, ducks, and geese.
Just a stroll around there was lovely. It was just a perfect place to feel their
atmosphere and their air and culture. There were other guests from Ireland,
England, and south France. Over the wonderful French style full course dinner,
we could talk with other guests. The dishes were with herbs, and all of them
were delicious. All of them were handmade cooking from the owner's recipes.
It took us two hours to finish dinner. Right after the dinner, the owner
prepared tea and coffee in the guest room, so all of us moved to the guest
room to have more talk over great milk tea or coffee. It was a wonderful
moment.
Roundwood House -- Morning
Irish breakfast is huge: two fried eggs, two thick slices of bacon, baked tomato,
two sausages, black/white pudding (they are like other sausages),soda bread,
dried fruits, and yogurt. It was all very good, and we easily skipped lunch while
we were in Ireland. Well, we couldn't eat lunch.....

ダブリンから西へ１時間15分のドライブでラウンドウッドハウスに到着した。 イン
ターネットでここを見つけた時、とっても好きになりここに泊まることが一つの大き
な旅の目的にもなっていた。 家は1730年代に建てられて、階段などいろいろな
所が当時のまま使われている。 林に囲まれて、ハーブガーデンがあったり、犬、
アヒルなどもいる。 ただ辺りを散歩するだけでもすばらしかった。 この場所は
アイルランドの文化と呼べる空気を感じるにはもってこいの場所だ。 私たちの
ほかにもアイルランド、イギリス、南フランスからのゲストがいて、フレンチスタイ
ルのフルコースディナーをいただきながら、みんなとお話することができた。 料
理はハーブ入りの手作り。すべてオーナーのレシピを元に作られている。 お話
しながらのお食事は楽しく、2時間もかかって食事を取っていた。 その後、ゲスト
ルームでお茶とコーヒーの準備がされていて、みんなはそちらに移動し、ミルク
ティーやコーヒーを飲みながら、お話した。 すばらしい時間だった。

アイリッシュの朝食はボリュームがある。 2個の目玉焼き、ハムのように厚い2
枚のベーコン、2本のソーセージ、ブラック・ホワイトプディングと呼ばれるソーセー
ジのようなもの、ソーダブレッド（イーストを使わないパン）、ドライフルーツとヨー
グルト。 すべてとてもおいしかった。 アイルランドにいる間、昼食は食べる気に
ならない。というより、食べれなかった。
Roundwood House --- Stick-Collector
Whenever we went outside to take a stroll, the two dogs always led us where
we walked. One of them loved sticks and branches. He liked to lead me to the
place where the sticks were. I picked one stick up and threw it. He picked it
up. Then he found another stick, and stared at me, so I threw it for him. He
did this over and over. I wanted to stay there for a few days more to throw
sticks.....

私たちがお散歩に外に出るといつでも、二匹の犬が私たちの道案内をしてくれ
た。 そのうち1匹が小枝を集めるのが大好きだった。 いつも小枝が落ちている
ほうに私を導き、拾って投げろと目で訴える。 拾ってくるとその小枝をくわえた
まままた新たに小枝を見つける。そして私に目で訴える。これが延々と続くので
す。。。 もう2，3日ここに居たいなあと思った。 小枝をもっと投げてあげるため
に。。。
Roundwood House became my most favorite place in Ireland. I would like to
come back there again some day..
ラウンドウッドハウスはこの旅行で一番好きな場所になりました。またいつかここ
に戻ってこようと思います。
