アイルランドの旅 その3
Kylemore Abbey
In the north part of the Connemara area, there is a beautiful
abbey. It was built in 1867-1871 by Mitchell Henry. He built
this for his wife, Margaret. Since 1920, the community of
nuns started to live there. It is isolated in a forest and by a
lake. When I saw it in the distance, it looked as if time
stopped. It was very quiet and sacred. I was overwhelmed
to see how the building melted into the forest over the years.
This building is still used by nuns, so we can only see a few
rooms inside. This was another castle.
If you walk farther ahead, there is a Neo-Gothic Church.
Connemara is famous for marble. Inside of the church, there
are pillars made from Connemara marble. It was a small
church, but beautiful. Whoever goes in the church will have
an astonished feeling.
カイルモアー修道院
コネマラ地方の北に美しい修道院がある。 それは1867年か
ら1871年の5年間かけてヘンリー・ミッシェルによって建てられ
た。 ヘンリーは妻のマーガレットのために建てたのだった。
時を経て、1920年から修道女たちがここを修道院として使い
始めた。 それが今のカイルモアー修道院。 カイルモアー修
道院は森の中で孤立した場所にあり美しい湖に面している。
遠くからこの修道院を見た時、そこだけ時間が止まったように
さえ感じた。 静寂したこの場所で、時と共に自然に溶け込ん
でいるこの姿に圧倒された。 この建物は今もなお修道院とし
て使われているので私たちは2，3部屋だけ見ることができた。
修道院からもう少し歩くと小さなネオゴシック教会がある。 コ
ネマラ地方は大理石の産地で有名である。 それゆえ、教会
の中は大理石でできた柱が美しくそびえている。 その教会に
入った人は誰でもその美しさにはっとするであろう。
Galway August 3rd
That week was the horse racing week. The day we arrived
was the ladies' day at the races. They dressed formally, and
we saw many many ladies in beautiful dresses. Galway is a
quite big city, so we enjoyed shopping and drinking. We
stayed in Asgard (B&B). The owner was very kind and they
have a wonderful breakfast salon.
ゴールウェイ 8月3日
私たちが行った週は年に一度開かれる競馬ウィークだった。
そして8月3日はレディーズデイという日で多くの女性たちが
フォーマルなドレスを着て競馬場へと向かう。 お陰で町では
美しいドレスを着た多くの女性を見ることができた。 ゴール
ウェイは大きな町で私たちはショッピングやパブでの一時を満
喫した。 この日私たちはアスガードというＢ＆Ｂにステイし、
オーナーはとてもいい人で、楽しい一時を過ごした。 ガラス
張りの朝食サロンでの朝食は最高だった。
Great Piece of Memories
Niabh Mcglynn is a jewellery designer in Galway. When I saw
one of her creations, a mermaid, I fell in love with it. Jeff
bought me this as a memory of Ireland.
思い出のかけら
ニーヴ・ミックグリンはゴールウェイ在中のジュエリーデザイ
ナー。 彼女のジュエリーの一つを見た時、一目ぼれしてし
まったのがこのマーメイドというネックレス。 夫がアイルランド
の思い出に購入してくれました。
Oiled Wool
As Ireland is famous for Aran knit sweaters, purchasing Irish wool was
one of my purposes. Wherever you go, there are many Aran knit
sweaters in shops. Some of them were handknitted, and some of them
were machine-knitted. I was not interested in purchasing sweaters but
wool. We saw sheep everywhere, and we thought it would be easy to
find wool. As we drove, we stopped by several small towns. Including
Galway, there were only a few places selling wools. I only saw a few
kinds. As I have read that fishermen's sweaters were knitted with oiled
wool to waterproof a little and make the sweater last longer, I wanted
to purchase oiled wool in Ireland. None of the shops except one
carried oiled wool. Fortunately I could find one small shop in
Connemara that carried it, so I could buy oiled wool. I never expected
that buying good Irish wool was so difficult....
オイルドウール（羊の油が残った状態のウール）
アイルランドはアランニットで有名である。 どこへ行ってもアランニットの
セーターが目に入る。 手編みであったり、機械編みであったりといろい
ろで価格もいろいろだった。比較的すべてざっくりと編んであった。 セー
ターを購入することはまったく頭になかったが、毛糸を購入するのは旅の
目的の一つであった。 車で通るとそこら中に羊がいる。 アランニットの
セーターがこれだけ売られているのだから、毛糸を見つけるのは簡単だ
ろうと思っていたら大間違いであることに気づかされた。 私たちは車で
移動していたので、小さな町に立ち止まり、毛糸を探した。 ゴールウェイ
を含めて毛糸を売っているお店は2，3件。 しかもアイルランド産は2，3
種類しかない。 そして私が探しているのはオイルドウール。 これが売
られていたのはコネマラの小さなお店一軒だけだった。 その昔アイルラ
ンドのフィッシャーマンたちは水しぶきから少しでも体を守るため、そして
セーターを長持ちさせるためにオイルドウールを使ったと本で読んだこと
がある。 だからこそこの地でオイルドウールがほしかったのだ。 やっと
購入できてうれしかったのだが、まさかアイルランド産の毛糸を探すの
がこんなに大変だとは思いもしなかった。
Where is Irish Linen?????
Irish Linen is very famous. In Japan, you can buy linen called Irish
linen easily in fabric stores. I thought I would find Irish linen
everywhere in Ireland. I was SOOOO wrong. At souvenir shops for
tourists, there are some linen products. I looked for the Irish linen
fabric itself, I looked for fabric shops. In small towns, they did not
have fabric shops. In Galway, and Dublin, I went to some fabric
shops. Guess what? I found NO LINEN fabrics. Where is Irish
Linen???
I also went to many antique shops in small towns and Galway. None
of them carried antique linens. They said, "Linens cannot last long,
and cannot survive over years." or "We used to export linens to
foreign countries, so we don't have much anymore." The northern
part of Ireland is famous for linen industry still now. Probably they
sell linen in the north, but not in other parts.
I told one of the antique shop workers that I looked for antique
linen. Then, she went to a different room, and brought a box of
antique linen. That was not for sale but her stash. Even in Ireland,
antique linen is very expensive. It usually costs three times more
than new linen products. Fortunately, out of one box of antique linen
she showed me, I could buy some linens from her (for myself and for
the shop). There were only two clothes with hand knitted Irish lace.
They were made in 1920s, and they were made from Irish white thin
cotton which was rare at that time. They were very expensive, but I
thought it was worth buying, because I knew it was very very difficult
to find antique Irish linen or hand knitted lace. I thought this was a
great opportunity.
アイリッシュリネンはどこ？？？？
リネンといえばアイリッシュリネンというほど有名である。 日本ではア
イリッシュリネンを生地屋さんで買うことができる。 私はアイルランド
に来たのだから、アイリッシュリネンはどこでも買えるだろうと思ってい
た。 この考えは大間違いだった。 確かに旅行者目的のお土産屋さ
んにはリネン商品が少し並んでいる。 しかし私はリネンの生地を購
入したかったので生地屋さんを探した。 小さな町はほとんど全部とい
うくらい生地屋さんがなかった。 ゴールウェイとダブリンで生地屋さん
を2，3件行ってみたが、リネンの生地は一つもなかったのだ。 一種類
もなかった。 アイルランドでアイリッシュリネンは何処？
それでも私はアンティークリネンを探すためアンティークショップを行く
先々で立ち寄った。いろいろなアンティーク商品が並ぶ中、これまた一
軒としてアンティークリネンを置いているお店がなかったのだ。 店員
たちは口をそろえて、「リネンは布だから使い切ってしまって残ってな
いんだよね」とか、「昔はよく外国に輸出していたから、昔のリネンはほ
とんど国内には残ってないんだよね。」 などと言っていた。 確かにア
イルランドの北方はまだリネンの産地で有名である。きっと北方に行
けば、あるのかもしれない。 でもアイルランドのその他の地域では探
すのが難しいことが分かった。
ゴールウェイのアンティークショップでアンティークアイリッシュリネンを
探している事を伝えると、その店員さんは通常売り物でなく、自分のた
めにとってあったアンティークリネンの箱を別の部屋から持ってきてく
れて、この中から少し売ってあげるといってくれた。 アイルランドでは
リネン類はあまり残っていないので、新しいリネンの値段の3倍以上が
相場になっている。 その中でとても気に入ったのは2着のブラウス
だった。 それらは1920年代に作られて、アイリッシュレースが手編み
してありコットン素材のものだった。 薄手の白いコットンが珍しい時代
に作られたらしい。 とてもかわいくて2着とも購入。 そのほかにも数
点購入した。 2，3点だけだけど、ショップに出せるように購入。 アン
ティークリネンはとても高価だったけど、アイルランドの人々によって作
られ、使われた商品は今では難しいことが実感でき、レアなことから
価値はあると思った。
Dublin The last day of Ireland
We stayed at Jurys Inn Christchurch. At the window of the hotel room,
you can see Christchurch just across the street. It was a wonderful
view. We enjoyed listening to street music and street attractions, and
we also surely enjoy drinking Irish beer in a pub.
At 8 o'clock, we were back in the hotel room. We heard the church bell
ringing just at 8 o'clock. Because it was in front of the window, it was
loud but beautiful. After 5 minutes, it started to ring again crazily for
10-15 minutes. It continued like that until 9 p.m. Can you believe
this? Even though you want to sleep, you can't! Therefore, our first
impression of this view totally disappeared from our minds. It was truly
loud.
ダブリン 最終日
ダブリンではジューリーズインクライストチャーチというホテルに泊まっ
た。 ダブリンゆえにホテルの部屋からの景色は期待していなかったが、
なんとクライストチャーチが通りを渡って目の前にそびえたっているとい
うすばらしい景色に驚いた。 ダブリンでは通りで歌や踊り、アトラクショ
ンがあり、それらを見たり、パブでギネスをはじめとするアイリッシュビー
ルを楽しんだ。
夜8時前に部屋に戻り、次の日の出発の準備をする。 八時きっかりに、
目の前の教会から鐘の音が響き渡る。 音は大きく、美しい音色にうっと
り。 しかし鳴り止んで5分後、今度はその鐘が狂ったように10分から15
分にかけてなり続けた。 なんとこれが9時過ぎまで続いたのだ！ うる
さくて、眠たくても寝れず、大変だった。 この部屋の景色がいいねえと
か、鐘の音が美しいと思った印象が私たちの頭からすっとんでいってし
まったのでした。
Ireland
You can buy anything through the Internet. It is also easy to find something you like through the Internet.
We got to see something you could not buy or something which belongs to Ireland: something you must come there
to see. Especially the memories in Roundwood and Ballynahinch Castle were the ones we looked for. We could see
Irish culture in people, scenery, and even in the air. They made this travel so precious. Ireland was just wonderful,
and we would like to come back again in the future.

インターネットは便利で、欲しい物は容易く見つけられるし、簡単に何でも購入することができる。 私たちはこの旅で
買えないものや、アイルランドでしか見れない、味わえないものを得ることができた。 特にラウンドウッドやバリナヒ
ンク城での思い出はまさに私たちが求めていたもので、人々、景色、そしてそこに存在する空気でさえアイリッシュ文
化を感じさせてくれた。 そういったことがこの旅の貴重な部分となり、すばらしい思い出に変えてくれる。 アイルラン
ドはすばらしく、またいつか戻ってきたいと、そう思った。
